Joan Marion Allen (née Corner),BSc,CStJ, died peacefully at the Kemptville General Hospital on Monday April 5, 2021, aged 92.
Survived by her husband Victor, Joan was perhaps best known for her role as an educator. With a quick wit and a dry sense of humor, Joan was a wonderful friend to all that knew her. Having graduated from McGill University class of ’52, Joan began a career of teaching at the public and high school level, first in Montreal in the Lakeshore school board, and later in the Mississauga school board. She also taught physical education at the University of Toronto (aquatic sports). From 1950-1960, Joan was involved in synchronized swimming at a time when it was changing from a recreational endeavor to an athletic sport; she later became technical Chairman of Synchronized Swimming Canada and was a key enabler in obtaining Olympic status for the sport.
In 1960 Joan and Victor moved to Ottawa, where she made a social contribution to the field of education and social services. Joan later became Deputy Director of First Aid Training and Development with St. John Ambulance, a position she held throughout the 1970’s. The result of this work was a complete suite of audio/visual training aides. Joan eventually rose to the rank of Commander within the Order of St. John. About the same time, Joan joined the Ottawa Women’s Canadian Club and became Chairman of that organization in the early 1980’s.
Joan was also very active in the equestrian world, in particular with Thoroughbred horses. In 1980, Joan and Victor moved to Spencerville Ontario where they started Renroc Farm. Joan gave strong leadership to the development of the equestrian program at the farm. Ever the teacher, Joan made it possible for young riders to enjoy a safe, supervised, and enjoyable experience.
Joan left the world a better place than when she found it.
