Joan Charette
With heavy hearts and gratitude for a life well lived the children of Joan Catherine Charette (nee Furlong) announce her passing on November 1st 2021.
Joan was born on September 26, 1925 to Gertrude (nee Power) and Michael Furlong. She was the second daughter following Rita Hamilton (deceased)(late Terry), followed by Thomas (deceased)(Lucy Jordi). Mom was raised in Eganville in a loving and close family and was inspired by her mother who was a successful milliner and small business owner. They spent summers at Lake Clear and her childhood memories were filled with simple fun like playing with paper dolls and her childhood nicknames of “Red” and “Rosebud” were a nod to her auburn hair which she maintained throughout her lifetime.
Our mother graduated as a Registered Nurse at the Lorrain School of Nursing in 1947 . During this time she met our father Robert (Bob) Charette (deceased) on a blind date and they married in 1949. Mom nursed at the General Hospital in Pembroke until 1957 and then raised her family in Petawawa. Even though her mother-in-law told her not to fill her backyard with boys trying to have girls, she did the exact opposite and raised mainly dishwashers, not mechanics, the opposite of our Dad’s wishes.
She eventually returned to part-time work as a rural route mail deliverer in Petawawa, Chalk River and Deep River and always found time to spend with friends, relatives, Church and family. Mom was very active with the Catholic Women’s League at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and maintained her activities of cross-country skiing, walking, golfing, swimming, travelling and many card games. We are left with memories of a life filled with humility, grace, prayer and Irish music.
Mom leaves behind a legacy of children, Robbie (deceased)(Patsy), Mary Bentley, Anne Johns (Paul), Paula Paquette (Darryl), Jeanne, Cathy Leblanc (Roger), Gerri Brunette (Jeff), grandchildren, Manya, Connor, Nicole, Todd, Joel, Evan, Graham, Michael, Christopher, Sarah, Samuel, Eric, Jordan, Kyle, Tara, Jimmy, Jeffrey and Allison (deceased) along with 24 great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by sister-in-law Jeannine Mohns, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Thank you to the staff of 2A at Miramichi Lodge who provided a caring and attentive home to Mom over the last 4 years. Donations to the Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County would be appreciated.
