Memorial Donation
On February 25, 2021 our beloved mother Jessica Mabel Bratton said goodbye and was reunited with her father and mother George and Bessie Knowles, her infant brother George, her husband Jim Bratton and her infant grandson James Bradley. She left behind her son Allan Bratton, her daughters Elaine (Chuck) Bradley and Anne Bratton. Mum was 91 years old.
Mum and Dad raised their family and after we grew up, Mum went back to work where she became the manager at Sears until she retired in 1984. Before and after retirement she was an avid volunteer. Mum loved her town of Virden and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Virden library. She also taught Sunday School and was active with the Mardi Club and Altar Guild at St Mary’s Anglican Church. Her volunteering was intermingled with many coffees with friends, her love of gardening and travel.
Mum was a voracious reader, a love that she shared with Allan. Many hours of discussions happened on current favourite authors or a new author that was discovered. They also shared the joy of a great movie, with their running joke being that a great movie had to have “horses or tanks”.
Mum’s love of travel took her far and wide with Anne, Elaine and Chuck. Our travels always included an adventure such as a glider ride over Napa Valley or celebrating her 80th birthday with a trip to Moscow. On her 85th birthday we flew over Tuscany in a hot air balloon and our last trip on the Rocky Mountaineer which celebrated her 90th birthday. There were many other favourite holidays such as multiple trips to California and her favourite winter holidays in Hawaii.
Mum loved her flower garden with a particular fondness for her peonies, lilies, irises and generally any flower that was yellow. She lovingly tended her garden which was along the back lane and always included conversation with passers-by. For us, the joy of her garden was a cup of coffee or a sip of wine on the deck during a warm summers’ evening while enjoying her flowers and the chirping birds. Mum, we love you and miss you beyond words.
Our love and appreciation goes out to our friends Linda and Pat Plaisier who were so gracious in their friendship and care and who treated Mum as their own. Another thanks to Linda Lane who often checked in on Mum and set up many FaceTime calls so we could speak to her and see her.
Mum left us with one of her favourite quotes “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened” – Dr. Seuss.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church Memorial Fund or your favourite charity would be appreciated.
