Smyth, Jerry Norman – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, husband, and grandfather, Jerry Norman Smyth of Dartmouth who left us on July 25th, 2021. Born in Fort Fairfield, Maine in 1946, he was the only son of the late Norman Smyth and the late Beulah (Hanson) Smyth of Perth-Andover, N.B.
Dad joined the U.S. Army serving from 1965-1969, two of which were in the Vietnam War as a Sergeant with the 1st Cavalry Division. His career included work as an Adult Educator in Baffin Island as well as numerous isolated villages in Quebec; and Executive Director of several sheltered workshops for the mentally challenged in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia pioneering the concept of community employment. He was very proud to have led Saint Leonard’s Society of N.S. from 1997-2009 as Executive Director serving men and women in conflict with the law and also the homeless in HRM. Jerry received several awards for his many contributions and leadership including the Jonathan Kenyon Memorial Award from Saint Leonard’s Society of N.S., The Luxton Award from Saint Leonard’s Society of Canada and a Certificate of Appreciation from Correctional Service Canada for his work in Community Corrections and the establishment of The Atlantic Halfway House Association (AHHA). Jerry’s fellow staff and friends will remember him as an avid softball/baseball player, fisherman and Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He is survived by his wife, Sherry (Inness); sons Robin Lower Sackville, Markus Woodstock, and Zachary (Shannon) Edmonton; grand-children Summer, Storm, Reign, Conner and Jax: stepchildren Lisa, Tony and Emily; step-grandson Julian Robia. Cremation has taken place. Visitation and service will be scheduled. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Shelter Nova Scotia.
