James Summers 1953 2021

James Summers
1953 – 2021
James Benson Summers of Seven Persons passed away on his 68th birthday with family by his side. He was the devoted husband to Brenda Fischer for 42 years. Jim is remembered with love by his children, Kari (Matthew) their children, Makayla and Mark; Robert; Jennifer (Neil) their daughter Desirae; and Lisa (Joshua); sisters, Bel (Gordon), Effie (Kevin) and Joan; nieces and nephews, Emily (Craig), David, Brendan, Kate (Daniel) and Kailin; aunt, Marnie and many cousins. He is also remembered by close friends of many decades, Allan and Marilyn Leis, Kent and Karen Phillips and Robert Martin and Susie Strachan. Jim was predeceased by his son, Michael (2017); parents, David (2011) and Margaret (2019) Summers; and his in-laws, Alvin (2015) and Evelyn (2005) Fischer. Jim was born in Musselburgh, Scotland and grew up in Ontario. He lived in Zambia when he was in high school and then studied Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba. Jim and Brenda were married in Winnipeg on October 21, 1978. He built his home on the family farm in 1986 in Cypress County, where he enjoyed working outside and tinkering with projects. Jim loved spending his summers camping, biking, hiking and spending time with his family at Mt. Kidd in Kananaskis. He loved to travel and greatly enjoyed cruising with his wife. Jim loved his job at Defense Construction Canada (DCC) at CFB Suffield and was fortunate to work with his wonderful managers and team. He was looking forward to celebrating his 10 year employment anniversary this upcoming June. Jim was passionate about volunteering and most recently was the Treasurer for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) Medicine Hat Branch. Jim was taken from us by cancer far too soon. While we will miss him forever, we are glad he is no longer in pain. Due to COVID restrictions and Jim’s concern for others’ safety, a private family service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, followed by the interment at Hillside Cemetery. Family, friends and loved ones are invited to remotely attend the Celebration of Life via Livestreaming and are encouraged to visit www.cooksouthland.com and click on the View Broadcast button on the homepage on Saturday, January 30, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. MST. Those who wish to remember Jim can with a donation to the Michael Brendan Fischer-Summers Kindness Award at the University of Calgary at the following link www.ucalgary.ca/registrar/awards/michael-brendan-fischer-summers-kindness-award.
