James Jim Howard Gladstone Saturday April 24th 2021

James Howard Gladstone
October 27, 1954-April 24, 2021
Passed away suddenly, at his residence, in Ayr, on Saturday, April 24th, 2021, in his 67th year. Beloved partner to Sharon Howe; Cherished father to Brian Gladstone and Janet Phillips (Nick); Much loved grandfather to Hayden and Callan Phillips. Sadly missed by his brother Steve Gladstone (Carol) and her daughter Jess Gallagher and his sister Susan Johnson (Christopher); also sadly missed by his many cousins and extended family, members of the Club and Walk Hunt Camp and current and former members of the Ayr Fire Department. Predeceased by his parents William Gladstone and Irene Vander. Jim was born, raised and lived out his life in the village of Ayr. In a traditional sense, Ayr is a community that he put value in. He spent his younger years growing up fishing the banks of the Nith River, being followed home to the end of Piper Street by stray dogs and as an animal lover creating a home for them. Jim was also well known in the Ayr Minor Hockey and Softball systems playing Jr. hockey in St. George. As he matured the majority of Jim’s life was spent giving back to the community via volunteer organizations; most importantly the Ayr Volunteer Fire Department where he served for over 41 years. Known for his large physical presence, natural story telling ability and infectious laugh; Jim’s most evident character trait was his flowing beard – leading to his lifelong nickname “Grandpa” as he was known by most. Once seen, he was not forgotten – even by kids who often thought he might be Santa Claus. Jim worked hard (everyday) and played hard. Although a quiet and private person he liked to be part of the action. In his short time here there was definitely a lot of action or “capers” as some would call them…assisted on occasion by Gibson’s Finest. He thoroughly enjoyed those moments with friends and family at “hunt camp” where time was spent with those closest to him. As he settled into retirement Jim enjoyed his time with Sharon – sipping on red wine, debating politics, doing crosswords and enjoying the serenity of the birds and their beautiful property. In their eyes, they didn’t need a lot but it couldn’t get much better than that. Two of Jim’s proudest moments were the births of his grandsons Hayden and Callan. He was proud of them and loved the two of them more than words can ever be spoken. Jim, Grandpa, Grandpa Jim, Jimmy Dean, will be missed but not forgotten. His helping hand, big heart, ability to cheer for the underdog and lifelong lesson of not judging a man on the words of others but by his own actions will be cherished forever. A graveside family service to honour Jim’s life will be held at the Ayr Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Ayr Chapel, 183 Northumberland St. Ayr. In lieu of flowers Jim would have wished for children in the community to have the same privileges that were given to him and his children through involvement in community activities. Donations to Canadian Tire Jumpstart would be appreciated. Online condolences and donations may be arranged through www.wmkippfuneralhome.com or by contacting Wm. Kipp 519 632-8228.
