James Andres Thomson
October 8, 1940 – March 7, 2021
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of James “Jim”, on the evening of Sunday, March 7th at the Hamilton General Hospital, during a difficult recovery from heart surgery weeks earlier.
Jim was the beloved husband and best friend of Florence Thomson (nee Ryan) of Burlington; father of Garnet; father-in-law of Deborah Harron-Thomson; and loving grandfather of Devyn and Brooke.
He will also be missed by his extended family and many friends, here and in the U.S.
He was born in Geraldton, Ontario on October 8, 1940, to parents, Joe and Jean Thomson (now predeceased), and raised in Welland, Ontario. Jim had many lifetime achievements that began from the time he was 18 years old when he was one of 15 promising, Ontario high school graduates selected for enrollment at the General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Michigan. He completed a five-year mechanical engineering degree in 1963. Following graduation, Jim had a successful 25-year career with General Motors Canada, in executive positions in St. Therese, QC and Oshawa, ON. He went on to become a General Motors dealer/owner in Fredericton, N.B. at Jim Thomson Pontiac and in Lindsay, ON at Trent Chev Olds Cadillac until his retirement in 2006.
Married for over 50 years, Jim and Florence were always happy to take on new business challenges together and enjoyed travelling to many wonderful places around the world. Jim’s passions included art, and jazz and classical music were part of his everyday enjoyment. As well, he was an avid bridge player, and achieved his goal of becoming a Life Master with certification from the American Contract Bridge League in 2020. He will be fondly remembered for his joy of life, living well, fishing, reciting poetry from memory, his sense of humour, loving the Niagara Region, and so much more. It was a life well played.
A Private Funeral Service will be held. Friends wishing to watch the Funeral Service via livestream or as a recording after the fact are asked to please follow the link on his Memorial Page through the funeral home’s website. The livestream link will be available as of Friday March 19, 2021.
For those who wish, donations in memory of Jim to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
