HENRY GUNTER SCHRITT
June 7, 1940 – July 22, 2021
We are deeply saddened to lose our Hero, our Warrior, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Henry was born in Marienburg, Prussia. Fleeing the horrors of WWII Germany, he and his family considered themselves fortunate to immigrate to Canada in 1951. Surviving Henry, from the original Schritt family, is brother Nick (Carol), West Bank, BC.
Henry started a lifelong woodworking career at sixteen years of age in his father’s company, Manitoba Cabinet Works, and later worked and retired from Display Fixtures.
Henry was many things to many people, always known for his master craftsmanship, generosity, tender heart, humour, opinions on everything (often unfiltered), love of flowers, good food, fishing, telling jokes but never remembering the punch line, his depth of love for family, and sincere gratitude for many good friends.
Henry deeply loved his children, Allan, Gail, Chris (deceased) and Jason. A huge pleasure for Henry was spending time with and watching his grandsons, Thomas and Jayden, build their friendship. He adored his wife Connie and was looking forward to their 50th anniversary later this year.
Henry’s battle with kidney disease weakened him over the past eight years. But it was the final 63 agonizing days of complications from humanity’s newest enemy, Covid-19, that caused his death.
The following quote is taken from Henry’s own “Story of My Life” and speaks to the simplicity and humility of this man: “When I think of the most relaxing time in my life, it was sitting in a boat with Jason and Allan, eating Klik sandwiches on rye bread, waiting for that fish to bite. I want my family to know how much I love them and when my life is over, I hope to be remembered as a good, hard-working man who always lent a helping hand.”
Henry, we promise you will always be loved and remembered in this way. As one of your favourite people always said, “Keep your stick on the ice, Henry!”
Henry was a firm believer that if you care for someone, you show it while they are alive, not after they die. As per his wishes, cremation has already taken place and no formal service will be held.
