Helena was born to Hendrikje Schulting of Drente, and Hendrik de Nijs of Brabant on May 13, 1934. Helena emigrated from Holland with her family in April of 1952. Once arriving in Canada, she met Bill Nywening (her future Husband) at a church Picnic. They were married January 3, 1954 when she was 20. She began working at Alberta Hospital before she started her family. Helena had 6 Children. After her Children were older, Helena found her passion in retail as a Deli manager with IGA. Helena’s Struggle with COPD and Dementia are now over. She will Join her husband Bill at the Little Mountain Cemetery.
Helena is survived by her 2 sisters Alie Willemina de Nijs, and Gretha Henriette Jongkind. She is Predeceased by her husband, William “Bill” Nywening, sister Peternella “Nellie” de Nijs, sister Sophia “Fia” Helena Vandermeer, and brother Willem “Wim” Hendrik de Nijs.
Helena will be greatly missed by her children: Rita Buitenbos (John), John Nywening, Carolin McVey, Arlene Cardenas, Kevin Nywening, Christine Nywening and her Grandchildren: Christopher Buitenbos (Cara), Dianna Nywening, Reilly Nywening; great Grand Children: Ava, Max and Bo Buitenbos
Helenas Celebration of life to be held on July 6, 2021 for 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery in the Foster McGarvey Funeral Home, 4820 Meridian Street NW, Edmonton AB, T6P 1R3. Interment to follow at the Little Mountain Cemetery followed by a reception at the Foster McGarvey Funeral Home.
