GOODWIN, Helen Jane – age 86, of Yarmouth, passed away on November 20, 2021. Born in Port Maitland on May 28, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Ivan and Bertha (Sollows) Thomas. Helen was loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who loved her family above all else. She had a very full life with adventures starting at age 18, when she was chosen as one of the girls to join the Weston’s British Tour for Canadian Girls. She often said that she was chosen because she knew how to talk. After her return, she gave several talks on her adventure and then attended the Yarmouth Vocational School and graduated with her secretarial diploma. She worked at the Yarmouth Royal Store and was the receptionist for Dr. DF MacDonald before her marriage in 1954. She and her new husband, William Goodwin, then moved to Oshawa, Ontario and stayed there until 1958 when they moved back to Yarmouth. After raising their 3 children, she returned to the Vocational School in 1974 to update her secretarial skills, after which she became the first curator of the Nova Scotia Fire Fighters Museum, a position she held until 1982. She volunteered with many organizations, such as Yarmouth Hospital Auxiliary, Alzheimer’s Society, and was the secretary for Brooklyn Bright Lights Seniors. She received the Yarmouth Volunteer of the Year Award in 2005, and received recognition from the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia in 2016 for her 10 years of volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Society. She is survived by her children, Sherri (Peter) Thomas, Coldbrook, NS; Barbara (Jeff) Irving, Moncton, NB; and Dan (Lisa) Goodwin, Woodstock, NS; grandchildren, Nicole (Chris) Cameron, Moncton, NB, Krystal (Steven) Cross, Quispamsis, NB; Jonathan (Nicole Foster) Jacquard, South Williamston, NS, Ashley (John) Kinsman, Lakelands, NS, Josh (Kate Dewey) Goodwin, Halifax, NS, Julia (Jordan Melanson) Goodwin, Woodstock, NS; great-grandchildren, Amelia & Adelynn Cameron, Desiree, April & Kalob Cross, and Thomas & Isabelle Kinsman. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William Goodwin, brother Garth Thomas, and sister-in-law, Beverly Reynolds Thomas. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be held on Friday November 26, 2021 from 7-9pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A memorial service will be held Saturday November 27, 2021 at 11am from Yarmouth North Baptist Church with Rev. Shawn Kehoe, Rev. A.D. (Bill) Newell and Rev. Jeff Irving officiating.
