Helen’s Obituary
Helen was born to Axel and Jenny Strandberg, the seventh of nine siblings. They lived on the farm north of Beatty, where she learned the value of hard work, starting at a young age as a cook in her Dad’s logging camp. That work ethic stayed with her throughout her life. She also developed her love of music, learning to play several instruments and playing in the family band.
Helen met Cecil Fennell at the Melfort skating rink, and after dating for some time they were married on May 1, 1944. They raised five children, Dennis(deceased), Gail, Brenda, Barry and Blaine. The entire family was very active in sports, golf, curling, ball and hockey being the main ones. Mom and Dad being very proud of the kid’s achievements and were always involved whenever we played. Mom enjoyed and had success in her golf and curling for many years.
Our Mother created a wonderful home for us, welcoming friends and relatives as well. She was a great cook and often we would come home to the smell of Mom’s cakes, cookies, bread and particularly her “world famous” cinnamon buns. On top of her household chores, Mom helped out at the farm as needed. Mom was also involved in the community as a member of the United Church singing in their choir. She enjoyed her time singing with the Choristers as well. A particular source of pride was her involvement with the Sask. Ladies Curling Association. She had the opportunity to attend the National Scotties Championship in Halifax as Provincial President. She was a proud member of the Parkland Auxiliary well into her 80’s – she told us “helping the old folks”. She loved her card games and still enjoyed cribbage matches at the care home.
Left to cherish her memory is her family, granddaughter Chantelle (Todd) Luey; daughter Gail (Doug) DeBoice and family Brad, Brady, Leanne, Craig (Carolyn); daughter Brenda (Byril) Kurtz and family Jayson, Matthew, Sarah, Jennifer (Tom) Doull; son Barry ( Lettie) Fennell; son Blaine (Cindy) Fennell and family Matthew (Jenny), Lexie; Megan (Tyler) Hoffus, Breyer and Dylan.
She was predeceased by her husband Cecil and their son Dennis and daughter in law Lorna.
Our sincere thanks to Bev, Hailey and Angie at Bev’s Care Home, and to our cousin Eldeen for spending wonderful time with our Mom. We know that she felt comfortable there.
In lieu of Flowers, please consider a donation to Parkland Auxiliary as a great way to honor our Mother’s memory.
