HAWTHORN, Jack
October 10, 1922 — November 13, 2021
At age 99, Jack Hawthorn peacefully passed away in Gimli, MB on November 13, 2021. His memory lives on through his children, Tracy (Les) and Wendy; his stepchildren, Karen (Kenny) and Carol (Larry); his grandchildren Serena, Rhonda, Lynn; step-grandchildren, Matthew, Brian, and Martin; and his numerous great-grandchildren. Jack was sadly predeceased by his wife of 22 years, June (d. 2002); his son Paul (d. 2017); and his stepson Brian (d. 2020).
Born in Keithly, England, Jack served in two wars as a member of the Air-Force. He immigrated to Canada in the early 1950s, to Winnipeg, MB, and was Headmaster of a boy’s school. And later, a street was named after him there.
Jack moved to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia and became the Director of Kelowna Diversified for the Mentally Handicapped. It was in Kelowna, BC, where Jack met our mom, June, and they married in 1979. Jack was one of the candidates in the first RCIA program presented at St. Pius X Church. Both Jack and June served as hospital visitors and in youth ministry. Jack also played bass in the choir and was a reader at mass. When Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he took great care in making sure her needs were met to the end. After June passed away, Jack moved to Manitoba to be closer to his son Paul.
Jack could tell amazing stories. He never lost his sense of humour. And, he was a blessing in our Mom’s life, as well as a true blessing to all those who knew him.
Jack, you will be greatly missed by all. Thank you for your friendship and being part of our family.
Family and friends will honour him, each in their own way. A Private Interment will be held.
