It is with sadness we announce the death of Harry McLeod Connell. He was born on June 20, 1925 in Trail, BC and passed away after a short illness on May 23, 2021 in Kelowna, BC. He was one month short of his 96th birthday.
He was predeceased by his wife Sylvia, brothers Will and Alex, and sister Janet. Harry is survived by his three sons, Ronald (Nerys), Kevin (Denise), and Brian (Evelyn), his brother Leonard, grandchildren Veronica (Doug) and Gareth (Quin), and five great-grandchildren, Mason, Callum, Sarephine, Henderson, and Peregrine.
He was born and raised in Trail where he lived most of his life, with the exception of his time in the Navy. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served on a Corvette (the Algoma) escorting convoys across the Atlantic. Harry was employed at Cominco (Teck) in the Zinc Plant and worked his way up from a labourer to General Superintendent of the new Zinc Plant. He retired at 60 years of age, with 43 years of service.
Harry (Flash Connell) was an excellent hockey player, a golden gloves boxer, and the weight trainer at the Cominco Gym for a number of years. During his younger years he enjoyed playing the guitar and mouth organ, both of which came out on every camping trip and there would be a sing-along around the fire.
He was an ardent outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing, and went on many trips with his sons, and his lifelong best friend Cliff Dawson. Actively involved with the Trail Wildlife Association and, in particular, the Murphy Creek Project, he was awarded the Pat Archibald Trophy in 2008. He enjoyed going to their trailer at Christina Lake every summer, right up to the end. Harry was a member of the Freemasons’ Corinthian Lodge No. 27.
Cremation has taken place. Due to COVID restrictions, an informal Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Bill Clark of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements.
