Harry Jaeger passed away July 21, 2021, at the age of 95.
Harry was born in Dortmund, Germany, in 1926, and was drafted into military service at the age of 16. Fortunately, he was soon captured and survived the war in a POW camp in England. While in England he learned English, which would prove to serve him well. After the war, once back in Germany, he secured his trade papers as a butcher. In 1956 he met the love of his life, Ursula, and they were soon married, at which point they made the decision to move to Canada.
Establishing themselves in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Harry joined the ranks at Algoma Steel Corporation, where he eventually worked his way into management. Life in the Sault brought four kids, and a love for the wonderful Ontario outdoors, especially fishing! In 1979, Harry accepted a promotion and transferred out to Calgary to be a part of the Algoma Quality Control team. It was a big move for Ursula and the family, but Harry believed Calgary offered a better future. This man knew steel and had developed an international reputation for his expertise, particularly in the area of rails. He worked tirelessly as a Customer Service rep, but always with patience and a kind demeanor. He did great work for Algoma and customers alike. Clients always loved dealing with Harry, as he responded to issues promptly, came up with solutions, and expertly solved problems.
A long and successful career at Algoma came to an end with retirement in 1991, leaving a lot of time for Harry and Ursula to go to their most favorite destination in the whole world – Hawaii – and they went plenty! This was definitely their little bit of paradise and the source of hundreds of fond memories. The family particularly cherishes the many steak BBQ’s that he loved to host, enjoying his amazing Caesars, and admiring his meticulous gardening skills.
New friendships were made, which have endured the many years – Karl and Annie, Werner and Hanna, Jack and Liz, Helena and Theo, Ed and Myrna – some of the couples who came to mean so very much to Harry and Ursula.
Harry leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Ursula, and his grown children, Thomas (Gloria), Frank (Rosie), Susan (Dave), and Claudia (Sean). Also survived by his sister, Christel, in Thessalon, Ontario. Missing him dearly are his grandchildren: Tommy, Timmy, Alecia, Chloe, Alex, Isabel, Mary, Sarah, and Anna. And a big growing list of great-grandchildren!
He was a wonderful husband, inspiring father and family patriarch, and an honest and decent man, who loved his family deeply, and was equally loved by all that knew him. He will be greatly missed but in our thoughts every day.
Ursula and the family would like to thank the staff at the Chinook Care Centre, and Rockyview Hospital (Unit 74) for their kindness and support.
Funeral Mass to be held Saturday, July 31st (1 pm) at Holy Trinity Church, 1525 45th Street SE, Calgary.
