H. Pearl’s Obituary
MacKay, Helena Pearl – Age 107, of Central New Annan, NS, passed away peacefully at Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche, NS, on January 5, 2021. Pearl was born in Central New Annan on September 12,1913. She was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Annie Jane (Bailey) Thompson. Pearl attended the Provincial Normal School, Truro, NS, and Mount Allison University, Sackville NB. She began her teaching career in rural one room schools in Central New Annan, West New Annan, Wentworth and Cape John. In 1959, she joined the staff of Tatamagouche Rural High School, which later became North Colchester High School. She retired from teaching in 1973. She was a small but mighty teacher who gained the respect of both her students and peers. Pearl attended Salem United Church, Tatamagouche Mtn. and West New Annan United Church. She was a member of the New Annan Community Club and Freedom Rebekah Lodge #62 from which she received her 80-year Jewel. She enjoyed quilting and knitting. After her retirement she and John enjoyed travelling. Pearl was predeceased by her husband John in 2001, her siblings: half- sisters, Lola Thompson and Gladys Bailey; sisters, Christine Thompson, Janie (Ted) Langille, Minnie (Alex) Ferguson, Bessie Thompson; and brothers, Raymond (Evelyn) Thompson, Kenneth (Janet) Thompson; and several nieces and nephews. Pearl is survived by nieces, Helen (Richard) Bujold, Eleanor (John) MacKay; and nephews, Mac (Kay) Langille, Raymond Thompson, Gregory (Andrew) Thompson, Kirby (Karla) Thompson and Lloyd Bailey. A special thank you to Pearl’s extended family, the Cleoughs, for their care and attention to Pearl when she lived in her own home. The family would also like to thank the staff of Willow Lodge, for the love and care they gave to Pearl over the past 5 ½ years and for the support given to her family. If desired, donations may be made to Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Willow Lodge, or charity of choice. Funeral arrangement in care of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche. A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2021 at Bell Gift Cemetery, West New Annan.
