Gwynneth Catherine Thompson
June 26, 1919 – May 06, 2021
On Thursday, May 6, 2021 in Oakville. She was the daughter of Major George and Mary Jones (nee Munro), both Salvation Army officers. Predeceased in 2006 by her devoted husband Elmer A. (“Tommy”) Thompson. They were married for over 60 years, having met on a blind date in Vancouver on Friday, April 13, 1945 and married in Edmonton on December 20, 1945.
Born in Edmonton on June 26, 1919, Gwynn grew up on the Prairies with her beloved older sister Mary, who predeceased her in 2004. She spent her high school years in the North End of Winnipeg. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg in the class of 1943, before moving to St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. Gwynn and Tommy lived briefly in Edmonton and moved to Montreal in 1946 where they raised their three sons, Jim, Don and Bob. First on Belmont Avenue in Valois and then on Lakeshore Road in Pointe Claire, Gwynn was a homemaker par excellence, a dedicated Sunday School teacher, a committed fundraiser for the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal and an active member of the community. Game for anything, she skated and skied and played tennis and loved attending Montreal Alouette football games, especially to watch Hal Patterson. Gwynn devoted much time to attending and supporting all her sons’ activities. Many happy summers were spent at Lake Memphremagog in the family’s rustic cottage where she honed her skills as a waterski boat driver extraordinaire.
When the boys went off to college, Gwynn returned to nursing as a Coronary Care nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Montreal. She and Tommy moved to Oakville in 1978. They quickly made many friends there, and many more later when they spent winters in Naples, Florida. Both were active members of St. John’s United Church in Oakville. They delighted in visiting, and being visited by, their grandchildren: Katie (David), Andrew (Beth), Susie (Bryan), Christie, Brian (Maki), Evan (Bailey), Kendra (Andrew) and Trent. And Gwynn loved hearing news of her great-grandchildren: Henry, Timothy, Alice and Benjamin, Joseph, Lisa and Avery. A lasting gift to all the family was her interest and skill in recording the family genealogy, including publishing her father’s tales as a young seaman who circumnavigated the world several times on Clipper sailing ships.
Gwynn moved into The Kensington in 2017, where her happy personality won more friends amongst the residents and staff and she always greeted everyone with a warm smile. In her last years at The Kensington, she was lovingly cared for by Iris, Subha, Gina, Fiona, Kristine, Ai and Kam, who all became part of her extended family.
She is survived by her sons: Jim (Kerry), Don (known as “Rollie”) (Mary) and Bob (Coral), and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A private burial service will take place with a Celebration of Life to follow when more can gather. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army, St. John’s United Church in Oakville, or to a charity of your choice.
