Obituary of Gladys Cowie
Gladys Cowie, age 90, passed away peacefully on September 26th surrounded by her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be loved and remembered every day.
Gladys was born in Saskatchewan where she met her future husband Jim. It was love at first sight and they were married for 66 wonderful years. Gladys and Jim moved to Fort McMurray in 1972 with their three children. They built their home and continued to build a happy life filled with family, friends, travel, and community involvement. Gladys had a great sense of humour and was a skilled seamstress who enjoyed crafting, gardening, cooking and baking, camping, parades, attending community events, crossword puzzles, Scrabble…and most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Gladys was loving, kind, patient, generous and very devoted to her husband and family. She was 90 years well-loved and her passing has left a huge hole in our daily lives. We will miss her dearly.
Gladys was proud to be a long-time member of the Fort McMurray Legion Branch 165 Ladies Auxiliary and the Legion. She made wonderful friendships and enjoyed many years of volunteering in various positions with the Auxiliary and doing fund-raising activities for the Legion.
Gladys is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Jim, three children Jim (Bev) and their two children, Colleen and David; Jan and her two children, Sarah and Corey; son-in-law Gerald, and Jeff (Trish) and their two children, Jaime and Krista. Gladys is also survived by her sister Shirley, sisters-in-law Janette (Arnold), Dora, and Molly, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held in 2022. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Gladys’ name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta at www.heartandstroke.ca/
Gladys chose this poem to remember her by:
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when day is done
I’d like to leave an echo…whispering softly down
The way of happy times, laughing times, and bright sunny days
I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun
Of happy memories that I leave behind when the day is done.
