Obituary
MATTEO, Gino John of Toronto passed away Monday, December 13, 2021, at the age of 83 leaving behind wife Marguerite (LaPointe), sons Anthony and Michael, daughter Lisa, beloved granddaughters Alicia and Alexandra, and nieces and nephews.
A member of the St. Michael’s College class of 1959, Dr. Matteo spent close to thirty years—most of his academic life—at St. Michael’s College, teaching alongside Marshall McLuhan for a time. Being keenly interested in film and media, Dr. Matteo was also one of the founding directors of the Cinema Studies program at Innis College.
A natural-born teacher, he delighted in the accomplishments of his students, many of whom remained devoted to him throughout his retirement. Although he was a specialist in Shakespeare and wrote a play based on the life of Nell Gwyn, King Charles II’s favoured mistress, which earned top honours at Bolder Colorado’s 2014 Moon Dance Festival, his interests in English literature were not restricted to the Elizabethan period, and nothing was off limits for his wide-ranging intellect. On his off hours, he enjoyed fishing, taking in theatrical performances, watching classic movies, or cheering on his Toronto Blue Jays and Raptors.
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” (The Tempest)
According to his wishes, a cremation will take place, arrangements entrusted to the Davidson Funeral Home, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne. There will be no visitation or funeral.
