August 22, 1929 – February 8, 2021
Tynes, Gertrude “Gertie” E. (Phills) passed away peacefully at McGarrell Place Nursing Home, London, Ontario on February 8, 2021
Predeceased by her parents Isaac C. Phills O.C. and Mary A. Phills, her husband Ray, her brothers Neville and James, and her sister Doreen. She will be dearly missed by her sister Patricia, her brother George, her brother Charles and his wife Doris and her sister-in-law Jackie. She will be remembered fondly by her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Gertie was raised in Sydney, graduated from the Provincial Normal College in Truro and studied at St. Mary’s University. She was a teacher in Nova Scotia for 35 years. For her outstanding work as a teacher, she received recognition and was honoured by the N.S.T.U., the Black Educators Association, and the Black Professional Women’s Group for her commitment to education and community.
Following retirement, she became active in her Nova Scotia community and church. She was a member of The Victoria Road United Baptist Church, where she served on many church committees. She was heavily involved in her community through her work with the Black Educators Association, the Retired Teachers Association of Nova Scotia, The Local Council of Women, Provincial Council of Women and was a founding member of the Black Professional Women’s Group. She co-authored the book, “Telling the Truth: Reflections, Segregated Schools in Nova Scotia” which was published in 1996.
The family would like to recognize the staff at McGarrell Place Nursing Home in London, Ontario for their wonderful care and compassion, especially the staff on Ivey Lane.
In keeping with Covid-19 restrictions, a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at 1pm from the Atlantic Funeral Home (Dartmouth Chapel). Due to limited seating, we kindly ask that you please register to reserve your attendance through the Eventbrite link located on Gertie’s memorial page. For family and friends that cannot attend in person, livestreaming of the service will also be available through Gertie’s memorial page.
Interment to take place in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
