Obituary
Freddie Joseph Goodwin
Sydney Mines
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Freddie Goodwin, age 69, on Friday, August 20, 2021, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines on April 13, 1952, Freddie was the son of the late Bruce and Margaret (MacKeigan) Goodwin.
Freddie was the last of five children. He was a special child, and although he was limited in many things, there were many things that he could do. He could run like the wind, and every time the fire whistle blew, he was off and running. It has been said that Freddie was there before the firemen.
Freddie also participated in the Special Olympics track and field, and won many medals. At an early age, he learned to drive a bike, and there was no stopping him. He used his bike to run errands for neighbours, and deliver parcels for some stores, to make a few dollars for himself. He put that many miles on his bikes that he wore them out, and had to get a new one just about every year.
Freddie was kind-hearted and would do anything to help someone.
After his mother died, Freddie moved to Sydney. While there, he volunteered at the Loaves ‘n Fishes every day for 30 years. He was so proud to be part of helping people who were less fortunate than him. After 30 years, he retired from Loaves ‘n Fishes, and received a beautiful plaque for his service.
At the age of 60, Freddie returned to Sydney Mines and lived at a Group Home until his health began to fail. He the took up residence in the Miner’s Manor, where he lived for almost 7 years.
Freddie will be greatly missed, but at least we know he is with Ma and Da, and the Lord. He will always be my special brother.
Freddie is survived by his only sister Beverly (Tom) Campbell, Millville, nephew Chris Campbell (Kerry), Florence, aunt Blanche Nickerson, Clark’s Harbour, and his best friend Ray.
Besides his parents, Freddie was predeceased by his brothers William, Sid, and Bruce, and his sister Patsy.
Words can never express how grateful we are to the nurses on 5 East, and Dr. Andrew Wawer. You are truly a blessing to the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Loaves ‘n Fishes, the Clyde Ave. Baptist Church, or a charity of one’s choice.
A graveside service will take place on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at 2 pm in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines, with family friend Cyril Keeping officiating.
