Obituary for Florence Danica Christie
August 3, 1931 – November 8, 2021
Born to Fred & Franka Unkovich. Pre-deceased by husband Dave Christie, sister Fran Martincic (John), niece Cathy and survived by sister Sylvia and children Ian (Marie DesRosiers) and grand-children Gabrielle & Jean-Luc and David (Kristin Gunn) and grand-children Colton & Logan, nephews John Martincic (Patti), Rick Martincic and grand-nephews Jared, Tyson, Johnny, Jason, & Cody as well as Aunt Frana Matic (Peter) & Ita, Kathy, Anthony.
Florence grew up on Turner Street surrounded by the Croatian community, fishing industry and life around Our Lady of Sorrows. She discovered her nursing vocation as a child and graduated from St-Paul’s training in 1953 and worked until 1965, including as head of ER nursing. She met Dave on the ferry after Yellowpoint Lodge and after a long courtship, they married, and together raised two sons, Ian & David. Her four grandchildren brought great pride and joy.
Diagnosed with Lupus, she volunteered with the BC Lupus Society, including as President. She provided much-needed counselling to newly diagnosed patients. Her impact & volunteering were recognized with a Canada Volunteer Award.
Florence counselled & comforted friends and family in need and had a gift for connecting with people. She loved reading, English gardens, Masterpiece Theatre, reality shows, family dinners, a good hamburger & fries, and walking at her and Dave’s favourite place, Kits Beach. She was elegant to the end.
Florence passed peacefully at South Granville Park Lodge. She will be missed by her loving family and friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM on November 18, 2021 at St. Augustine’s Church (2028 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver).
