Evelyn’s Obituary
Groves, Evelyn Mae (Atwood) Nickerson Atkinson – 91, passed away suddenly at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, with her daughter, Josephine by her side. Born in Barrington on April 20, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Winnifred and Mable (Garron) Atwood. Evelyn was the youngest of 12 children. Mom was a hard worker all her life, starting at age 14 when she worked at Oxford Woolen Mill in Oxford, N. S. after having moved there with her parents to find work. Later she was a waitress at the Ritz in Shelburne during WWII and worked at various fish plants in the Barrington area while raising her four children. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Vasil Roy Nickerson, second husband, William Norman Atkinson and third husband, Neil Alexander Groves and her son, Kenneth (Kenny Cob) John Atwood; brothers, Benjamin, Herman, Howard, Clayton, Percy and Norman; sisters, Tabitha, Nettie, Hilda, Sylvia and Edith. Evelyn is survived by her companion, Ivan Fisher and his family; son, Lewis (Janie)Nickerson of Kingston, ON; daughters, Josephine (Herbie) Stoddard of Barrington Passage and Claire (Joe) Garron of Shelburne; grandsons, Chris (Rhonda) Stoddard, Benjamin (Olivia) Penney and Norman Atwood; granddaughters, Suzanne (Levi) Penney, Sabrina Penney, Natasha (Jeff) Smith, Meaghan (Jason) Wayne, Wendy Stoddard, Stephanie (Jody) Stoddard and Karen Atwood; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of the Yarmouth ER for their compassion and care. A family graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 13, at 2:00 pm from West Head Cemetery, with Pastor Vince Robertson officiating. Due to Covid 19 restrictions proof of vaccination will be required to attend the graveside service. Memorial donations may be made to the West Head Cemetery or any charity of choice.
