BURNS, ERINA (Rena)
August 12, 1928 – May 15, 2021
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Erina (Rena) Burns from Hamilton, Ontario at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents Annamaria and Giuseppe Cardoni and her brothers Elio, Dominic, Dario, and Geno. She is survived by her husband of 59 years Fergus Burns, her son Dwain Burns, wife Kimberly Burns and grandsons Brady and Liam Burns; her daughter Dr. Karen Elizabeth Ann Burns and her husband Yves L’Italien; her sister, best friend, and constant companion at Wentworth Heights Marie Henderson, brothers Arnie and his wife Marion, Al, and Demo Cardoni, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Canada, the USA, and Italy. She was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia as a coal miner’s daughter and moved to Hamilton at the age of 16. She worked at Sovereign Pottery. She was proud of her work decorating and glazing fine china. She married in 1962 and raised her family as a devoted member of the Roman Catholic faith initially at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and later at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hamilton. She was cared for by the devoted and compassionate staff in the long-term section of Wentworth Heights from November 2018 to her passing and by many caring and attentive physicians, nurses, and allied health care professionals who work in the Intensive Care Units of the Juravinski Hospital during the past 18 months. Rena was an avid Hamilton Tiger Cats and Toronto Blue Jays fan. She had a heart of gold, a smile of pure joy, and a kindness that extended to all that she knew.
Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME (796 Upper Gage Avenue) on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 from 10AM-12PM. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, any one that wishes to visit must RSVP either by using the RSVP link on www.dermodys.com or by calling 905-388-4141. Everyone in attendance must wear a mask and practice social distancing.
She will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery later the same day. For those wishing to make donations, in lieu of sending flowers, a gift may be given to the Intensive Care Units of the Juravinski Hospital, in care of the Juravinski Hospital Foundation, 711 Concession Street, Hamilton, Ontario or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 305 East 37th Street, Hamilton, Ontario. She will be missed dearly by her family, friends, and neighbours. May she rest in eternal peace.
