It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a beloved mother – Elizabeth « Aunt Bet » (Shea) Downey. Betty passed peacefully away at the Central Newfoundland Regional Hospital, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL on Sunday, February 28th, 2021 at the age of 94 years.
Elizabeth was born in Fleur de Lys, NL on April 12th, 1926 to James & Elizabeth Shea. Mom’s best hobby was knitting – some of her knitting can be enjoyed all over the country. In early years, she loved making and decorating wedding cakes, at any given time we would have a three tier wedding cake sitting on a table in our house, where we had to step lightly until it was delivered. Later in life, Mom moved from the Baie Verte Peninsula to Hollett Park Retirement Living in Grand Falls-Windsor where she made her new home and met many wonderful friends.
Betty is predeceased by her husband – Ambrose Downey; parents – James & Elizabeth Shea as well as many other family members.
Betty is survived by her only daughter – Kay (Pierre), Fredericton, NB; only grandson – Darrell (Leslie), Fredericton, NB; sister – Nance, as well as a very large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
Due to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, the Public Health Advisory and associated restrictions, we regret to announce that there will be no Public Visitation or Funeral Mass. Father Camillus Ekedobe will conduct a Private Family Graveside Service at St. Pius Roman Catholic Cemetery, Highway 410, Baie Verte, NL.
We want to extended a heart full of thanks to the Management and Staff at Hollett Park Retirement Living for supporting my Mother until her last days. A very special thank-you to Shirley Huxter-Fewer who was my Mother’s best friend and who was by her side, in our unfortunate absence due to COVID-19, until the last moments.
