Betty Whiffen – 83, Truro
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Elizabeth “Betty” Whiffen at Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro on April 9th, 2021.
Born in Topsail, Newfoundland on January 5, 1938, she was the daughter of the late William “Bill” and Augusta (Rickert) Mercer.
On December 28, 1963 she married the love of her life, William “Bill” Whiffen and they raised a son, Stephen and two daughters, Andrea and Kristina.
Betty took great pride in her career as a secretary for the provincial government, Memorial University and Iron Ore Company where she worked for many years while raising a family. Betty’s passion in life was travelling and the Whiffen family have many happy memories of trips throughout Atlantic Canada and the Northeastern States during summer vacation. After retiring, Betty and Bill took advantage of their free time to globetrot to different countries and experience all that the local cultures had to offer. Betty and Bill moved to Truro 25 years ago and made it their home. Betty’s other passion in life was singing and she belted out many a hymn over the years as a dedicated member of the Immaculate Conception Church choir. Betty enjoyed laughing and spending time with family and friends and she was always there whenever anyone needed a helping hand or a smile to raise their spirits.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and is survived by her son, Stephen (Reiko); daughters, Andrea (Charles) King and Kristina (Robert Molloy) Whiffen; grandson, Christopher; granddaughter, Naomi and other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
Special thanks to the staff of Parkland Estates and Cedarstone Enhanced Care for their care and compassion over the last four years, as well as the staff at Colchester Hospital ER and Palliative Care unit, including Dr. Daniel Smith.
There will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass will be held at a date to be determined.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
Arrangements are under the direction of Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro.
