Obituary
Szabo, Edward
December 18, 1940 – July 18, 2021
He is no longer trapped in a broken body. He is present with the Lord and free in every way.
Life with Ed was truly an adventure. He started out at a very young age working as a farm hand, then came to the big city of Saskatoon and drove truck, worked at Robin Hood Flour Mill, worked in a furniture store; and then took training as a Nursing Orderly and worked at that occupation for many years at both City Hospital and RUH. He was then offered jobs as first aid/safety officers on large construction projects in the mining sector. Great West Steel as a Purchasing Agent was his next adventure, followed by a construction project superintendent. The purchase of Ed’s Place, a gas bar and confectionery on Highway 14 was his pride and joy and his last adventure in the world of business. Due to health reasons Ed’s Place was sold and he retired from the business world.
Ed enjoyed hunting and fishing and anything outdoors, but most of all flying. He had his pilot’s licence and owned a Cessna 172 which he cherished, and flew mostly in the north. He was a family man, and enjoyed nothing better than family activities and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He made an effort to be with them. Grampa night was special to him and the grandkids. He had an unusual sense of humor which was enjoyed and appreciated by his many friends.
Ed is survived by his wife Hilda of 60 years, daughter Toni Duh (Darren), grandchildren Adam Duh (Pauline), Ashley Duh and his great-grandchildren Arya and Leo Duh, and his siblings Betty MacLeod, Olga Balon, Helen Szabo and Henry Szabo. He was predeceased by his parents Mike and Elizabeth Szabo, brothers Mike Szabo and Andy Szabo.
Thank you to the cardiologists at RUH who extended his life by about 30 years, to the TCU at City Hospital; and the kind and thoughtful staff at St. Ann’s Nursing Home where he had only a short stay.
A Liturgy of the Word Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at Acadia-McKague’s Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Dr.) in Saskatoon. Because of the size of the chapel, social distancing is available. The service will be recorded and uploaded the next day to: www.faithproductions.ca/livestream The Rite of Committal will follow after the lunch at Woodlawn Cemetery.
