Edward Patrick O’Toole
December 06, 1939 – June 23, 2021
It is with heavy hearts we let go of a dear husband, father, poppy and great grand poppy — Edward O’Toole of St. John’s passed away peacefully after a brief stay at the Palliative Care Unit following a courageous battle with cancer.
He is predeceased by his beloved daughter Debbie O’Toole, parents Ronald and Margaret O’Toole, brothers Ronald and Douglas, sisters Marie and Patricia, nephew Greg Osmond and son-in-law Jerry Walsh.
Leaving to mourn Patricia, his loving wife of 60 years; 3 children: Terri Walsh, Ed II (Krista), Sean (Joanne); 4 grandchildren: Ashley (Jon), Jennesa (Tony), Samantha (Brandon) and Eddy III; and 3 great grandchildren: Kyla, Caleb and Kenah; 2 sisters: Bernice (Sid) and Peggy (Ron) and a large circle of family and friends.
Edward was famously known to be as hardworking one could be, and then some. Throughout his life he dedicated himself to many passions, and his ever-present enthusiasm for life was infectious. His spirit and devotion to Newfoundland were so notable they won him recognition as a tourism ambassador. Most of his working years were spent maintaining the Fort William Building for the Newfoundland Telephone Company. There, he greeted everyone who crossed his path with a friendly face and formed lasting friendships with many of his colleagues. In his retirement, he built a beautiful summer home for his wife and family in Holyrood, the town which was the setting for his fondest childhood memories. When in the city, his presence was often known by the display of Christmas lights that decorated the outside of his home and the entirety of a 3-storey maple tree. Our Edward, who was always ready to lend a hand, who loved to dance, to be outdoors, to read and share history, blessed us with the brightest of memories that will inspire and guide us until we meet again someday.
Thank you to Paramedics Providing Palliative Care, PC Unit, and Health and Community Services who dedicated themselves to make Edward’s final days as comfortable as possible.
As per Dad’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation from Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Sunday, June 27, 2021 from 12 noon – 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, June 28, 2021 at 10 a.m. from St. Patrick’s Church. As Debbie, his beloved daughter passed earlier this year during lockdown, we welcome visitors at Caul’s and St. Patrick’s Church, for both Dad and Debbie. Inurnment for Dad and Debbie will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Columbarium. Flowers accepted, or donations may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation or to the Daffodil Place.
