The Reverend Douglas Hugh Smith
Peacefully at Fenelon Court, in his 91st year, Doug was welcomed into the arms of the Lord on the evening of May 16, 2021.
He will be dearly missed by his wife and best friend of 67 years, Jackie, who also made it possible for him to spend as much time at « The Lake » as possible while he endured progressive dementia. He will be remembered fondly by their four children, Carol (Phil), Brian (Judy), Barb (Mike) and Blake (Barb). Doug will be missed and held forever in the hearts of his 21 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents S.J. and Myrtle Smith of Chatham and his sister Marion McMillian.
Doug attended University of Miami, where he met Jackie, as well as San Francisco theological seminary, and Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto. He spent much of his later career as the minister at the First United Presbyterian Church in Boynton Beach Florida, enjoying catamaran sailing in his free time. After retiring to Sturgeon Lake, he also enjoyed short term pulpit roles at various local charges.
Doug was a thoughtful family man and famous for hosting Doug & Jackie’s « summer camp » for grandchildren, associated parents, friends and visitors to the lake. He could be found puttering around their beautiful lakefront property tending to the grass, forest trails, often while whistling. He had a love for animals especially dogs and Bernadette who will forever hold a special place in his heart. His family will forever remember festive gatherings at their home including his love for practical jokes and brain teasers puzzles around the holidays. His signature was leading the gathered clan in Doxology with an Amen chorus as the grace over a meal.
