In Loving Memory
Douglas Charles Bennett
Born to Life: December 27, 1935
Born to Eternity: October 2, 2021
It is with great sadness that family announce the passing of Douglas (Doug) Charles Bennett.
Doug was born in Revelstoke, BC. As a child he moved first to Trail, then Vancouver, finally residing in Powell River where Doug graduated from high school. During his time in Powell River, he worked after school at his father’s garage which eventually became his vocation in life, a heavy duty mechanic. After graduating and working for a few years, he moved to Lytton where he met the love of his life, Carole. Married in 1960, they spent 61 years devoted to each other.
From Lytton they moved to Vernon and Prince George where Doug worked for Rendall Tractor for many years. With this job came long hours on the road and many days away from home so he took a leap of faith and moved to a place called Nelson. There he worked as an instructor at Selkirk College for the heavy duty mechanics program until his retirement. Doug made Nelson his lifelong home.
Doug and Carole’s love for family brought them three children which they always felt were a gift from God. He was a devoted father and his family became his passion. He loved the outdoors which led to many camping, hiking, and skiing trips with family and friends. Each summer saw vacations on the coast at the Bennett family cabin. Everything Doug did came from a place of love and spending time with his family. He always put family first.
Doug was baptized a Catholic in his early 20s and was devoted to his faith. He was a spiritual man and became wholly involved with the church. His personal passion was designing and creating wrought iron. Many of his projects can be seen at the CPR Station, Mary Immaculate Church, their family home in Nelson but most of all, within his children’s homes.
Predeceased by his parents Charles & Naomi Bennett, Douglas is survived by his wife Carole; daughters Allison and Willo; son Chuck (Karen); grandchildren Katelyn, Graeme (Britany), Eric, Carley (Ross), Dylan, McKenna and Aidan; and great grandchildren Ella & Harper. He is also survived by brothers Brian (Wilhelmina), Howard (Eileen); sister Joan and many nieces and nephews.
It is with loving hearts we say to a man who was quiet and gentle but spoke volumes with his presence: “It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you the day God called you home”.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Douglas Bennett December 27 1935
