Douglas Allan Black was the youngest child of Hugh Rutherford Black and Mary May (Caithness) Black. Hugh was born in Galt, ON and Mary in Wellwood, MB. They were married in 1904 and all their 7 children were born in the Wellwood area.
The family moved to the Naicam-Spalding area in 1925 and farmed rented land until 1940 when they bought and moved to a quarter NE of Archerwill. The older siblings had all moved on by then and only Allan moved with his parents to Archerwill to help develop the farm.
He joined the armed forces in 1942 and served with the Royal Canadian Artillery until his discharge in 1945.
On November 16, 1945, he married Alice Caroline Schweitzer, daughter of Frank and Rose Schweitzer of the Algrove area. He was active on the local Co-op, Credit Union and Hospital boards and councilor for the RM of Barrier Valley. He also helped organize the Royal Canadian Legion in Archerwill of which he held a life membership.
They farmed until 1975 when Allan accepted a position in Regina with the Provincial Ag Department as a training specialist for Sask Crop Insurance. He later became the Director of Field Services for all of Saskatchewan.
He took mandatory retirement at age 65 and they built a new home in Tisdale. They spent their remaining years in Tisdale. Upon their arriving in Tisdale, he became instrumental in building the Golden Age Centre and held the position of President for 4 years. Their retirement also included travelling, fishing and spending time with family and friends.
Allan was predeceased by his parents, in 1944 and 1948 and all of his siblings – Perce 1905-1987, Jack 1907-1962, Wallace 1909-1989, George 1913-1994, Isabelle (Bert Bailey) 1915-1970 and Roy 1919-1990.
He is survived by Alice, his wife of over 75 years and their 3 sons, Lyle (Fay), Wayne (Betty), Keith (Denise) and their families. He had 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Allan is also survived by brothers-in-law Arnold (Jenny) Schweitzer and Erwin (Betty) Schweitzer and sisters-in-law Josephine (Bert) Moors and Loraine (Orville) Burak along with many nieces and nephews of both the Black and Schweitzer families.
