Doris Lily Snow
99 Kippens Road
Kippens, Newfoundland
July 23, 1937 – October 29, 2021
Born in Nicholsville, Newfoundland on July 23, 1937 to Arthur Charles Dennis and Jean Marguerite (Nichols), Doris was the eighth of thirteen children. She grew up surrounded by family, attended school and helped with the usual chores that where a part of rural living at the time – raising vegetables, milking cows, gathering eggs, and helping with the raising of her siblings at the side of her mom and dad.
Doris went to work in her teens to help to support her family. She worked as a waitress, a cashier, and movie theatre attendant. She met a dapper young man from Deer Lake proper, and in 1955 married Gordon Snow. Gloria (Jim) was born when the young family moved to Cormack, NL.
Doris and her family moved to Stephenville to pursue opportunities offered by the Ernest Harmon Airforce Base. During the next two decades, the family grew with the addition of Jamie (Vita), Pamela (Tim), and Penny (Tony). Doris was ahead of her time as she balanced being a full-time mom and employment – she worked at the Dome Theatre, NSCO club, Arlims, Loralie, Chateau, and College of the North Atlantic. Doris was in her element though at home surrounded by her children, friends, and extended family. She loved game shows, the TV remote, soap operas, babies, playing cards, trying new recipes, reading, gardening, picking berries, time at the camper at Bottom Brook, lottery tickets, desserts, dogs, cats, bingo, going for drives with her husband, friends and family, cooking Sunday dinners for a crowd, baking treats for every occasion, and decorating for holidays.
Doris loved her home. She took pride in making everyone feel welcomed with tea, food, and a smile. People she met from all over the world came to visit and spend a spell catching up. She always had at least two baked desserts on hand for people to enjoy when they dropped by.
She loved to stay connected with people long before social media and email. She was a firm believer in sending letters and cards, especially remembering everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries. Her address books overflowed with new addresses and phone numbers as her friends and family moved, and new people came into her life. She loved displaying her numerous Christmas and birthday cards for all her visitors to see as much as she loved addressing and sending them out to others.
Most of all, Doris loved her family which expanded over the years. She welcomed nine grandchildren – Eric (Aimee), Joel, Neill (Kate), Beth (Jamey), Madison, Savannah (Joshua), Logan (Toni Marie), Brady, and Myles, and great – grandchildren Gordi, Kane, Benjamin, Kallie, Katie, and Kashton.
Doris had a life well – lived and well – loved. She is survived by her siblings Eva, Elizabeth, Ada, Ruby, Fred, and Rob, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be remembered very fondly by her special friends – Ruth, Kenny, Vivienne, Stephen, Thor, Ciel, Lena, and her bingo buddies.
Those who loved her will cherish her memories, wish she had shared more of her favourite recipes, and remember her sage advice.
The family will host an Open House at 99 Kippens Road on Monday, November 1, 2021 from 2:00- 8:00 pm. and 6:30 – 7:30 pm tributes. A Celebration of Life will take place in summer 2022.
