Doris Lamar Hartley, 96, of Nelson, B.C. died peacefully at her residence November 25, 2021. Her death was at a time and place of her choosing.
Doris was born February 1, 1925 in Irma, Alberta, to Roy & Eliza (Riddell) Shotts.
She grew up on a farm on the Alberta prairie and she and her sister, Margaret, rode a horse to attend the local Avonglen school. She grew into an independent young woman with a strong feminist side, no doubt spurred on by her mother’s prominent participation with the United Farm Women of Alberta.
She began work at Vancouver General Hospital in 1944 and got her nursing diploma in 1947. Her practical skills in that area helped make her much appreciated in later years by family and friends.
Doris married John (Ian) McKellar Hartley December 10, 1948, in Calgary, Alberta, and they had five children. In the late sixties, with the children grown, she worked as a librarian for several years which she enjoyed, partly due to her great love of reading. She also enjoyed playing bridge and Scrabble, and listening to light classical, Celtic and Big Band music. In their retirement years, she and Ian indulged their love of travelling and visited more countries than most people ever see.
She is survived by daughters Karen Walker, Kathy Hartley, Glenda Hartley, Gayll Morrison and son, Tom Hartley. She is also survived by 5 grand-children and 2 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, Ian: January 6, 2005 and by her sister, Margaret Clifford: January 25, 2012.
No in-person service is planned. Cremation has been arranged.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Doris’ favorite charity, the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to the staff at Lakeview Village in Nelson for their kindness, compassion and devotion to their residents.
