Doris was born in Kensington sometime between Aug.
17th and Aug. 18th, 1920
to Earle and Carrie (Easter) Kennedy. The Kennedy family were a proud
Scottish family, central figures in the economic and social life of
Kensington. When she was a young girl, her father Earle died suddenly,
leaving her Mum, Carrie, a young widow with seven children. Doris went
to live with her Aunt Edna and Uncle Irvin Champion- they were like
second parents and their son, Allan, like a brother. In school, she
had a talent for math. She was the recipient of the Governor
General’s medal and went on to study at Prince of Wales
College. She married Keith Waite and for 50 years, helped him run a
successful grocery store and egg grading business, K. L.
Waite’s, on the main street of Kensington.
Doris had an incredible work ethic and a heart for serving
others. She was a social worker long before the term was ever coined.
While raising her own children and working at the store, she would be
out and about « helping » other people. She helped those who
were sick, bereaved, lonely, dying: young mothers struggling with new
babies. Her visits were usually accompanied by trays of homemade baked
goods; clothing, gifts, anything that was needed.
Doris was active in Kensington’s community and
church life. She was a faithful member of Kensington Presbyterian
church and a life member of the Ladies Guild. She worked at countless
church fund-raising events: suppers and bake sales where her
fruitcakes brought in a hefty sum. She attended Home and School- even
acting in one of their plays and enjoyed socializing at Bingo at the
Kensington Legion.
Doris and Keith built their cottage in Darnley in 1952. She
delighted in seeing her family and friends (and assorted dogs!) enjoy
the summer in that special place. Sundays at the cottage
were « open house ». She never failed to arrive without a
basket of food for Sunday night suppers.
After Keith died, she sold the store and house, and a new
adventure for Doris began. She moved next door to what was fondly
called « The Inn on the Hill », the Kensington Seniors Co-op.
She spent ten happy years there adding to her long list of
friends.
Doris’ memory was legendary. She was called upon to
frequently « fact check ». If you wanted to verify something
it was, « Ask Doris. She’ll know. »
Doris delighted in baking and shopping at Eaton’s
in town and at Belle’s in Montague. She was an avid hockey
fan and, her favorite drink, was a rum and coke.
After living in Kensington for 80+ years, Doris moved to The
Charlotte Residence in Charlottetown where her sister Marjorie also
resided. She made friends easily and here she was content and
comfortable for several years. Thank you, Joyce Pickles and all the
staff!
A private graveside committal service will be held in
Kensington with Rev. Tory Griffiths officiating.
The family would like to thank the staff on St.
Dunstan’s Way at The Mount for their kind and compassionate
care of our Mom over these past years. Finally, we want to thank
Davison Funeral Home for their comfort and professionalism during this
time.
– Janice, Judy and
Ken.
