Donald’s Obituary
CROWELL, Donald Nehemiah – It is with sadness of heart that the family of Sir Donald Nehemiah Crowell, age 98 years, announce his passing on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at Roseway Hospital, Shelburne. Don was the son of the Freeland Crowell Sr. and Jenny Crowell of Bear Point. He was predeceased by his wife, the love of his life, Ruth (Sears) Crowell just less than a month ago (May 15). They had been married for 78 years. He was also predeceased by his sons, Donnie and David; daughter-in-law, Marilyn; and grandson, Andrew; as well as siblings, Roswell, Freeland, Andrew, Barbara, Doral, and Carroll. Don is survived by his children, Sharon (Russell) Nickerson, Roger (Libby) Crowell; as well as his sister, Helen (Carl) Smith, ‘Honey’ as she was known by, and Carl spent much time with Don and Ruth over the years travelling around and of course, playing Rook!; sister-in-law, Sylvia Crowell; and Jimmy Graham, who was just like a son to him. Don will also be missed by his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as his beloved church family. ‘Papa Don’, as he was affectionately called by the many people whose lives he touched over his many years, was a World War II veteran who served his country well. Having left a young family back home in Bear Point, Don found himself landing on Juno Beach, Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 when the D-Day invasion took place. This was the event that shaped his life. When he returned home after the war (a hero to all who knew him), he settled into civilian life with his growing family and lived a quiet, humble life. He worked mostly on salt fish and also did some carpentry work as well. Eventually, he and Ruth moved to Clyde River where he enjoyed gardening and making crafts as well as cutting wood for his winter supply. He always kept busy! Don didn’t talk much about his time overseas during the war but in 2015, he was honored by France’s National Order of the Legion of Honor for taking part in massive allied efforts to liberate the country from Nazi occupation. This was France’s highest national honor and from that day forward, he was known as Sir Donald Crowell. A well-deserved honor for a life well lived awarded to a much loved man. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. W. Hunter Blair. Memorial donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Advent Christian Church, Bear Point. A private family graveside will take place from the Birch Hill Cemetery, Bear Point. Online condolences may be sent to huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net
