Dickson was born on October 2, 1960 in Toronto, Ontario and has resided in Oakville, Ontario since 1997. Dickson graduated from Kipling Collegiate High School in 1974 before attending Wilfred Laurier University where he earned an Honours Degree with Distinction in History. Upon graduation Dickson practiced real estate law with Weir & Foulds where he met his wife, Heather. They were married in 1995 and had a son, Adam, in 2003.
