Passed peacefully away at JPMH after a short illness, Desmond Basil Mallows at the age of 90. Our Dad was born in South Shields, England. At the age of 8 during the Second World War he was evacuated along with his brother and sister and sent on a train to Ravenstonedale, England. He stayed with a family there for 6 years. Dad loved the movies when growing up in England and continued to enjoy them all his life. He loved the old black and white movies best! He sailed to many countries later while sailing on the ship S.S. Berylstone which he joined in 1952. One of the ports Dad’s ship sailed to was Botwood where he met the love of his life, our mother.
He immigrated to Canada in 1955 and started working at the old Gander Airport as a kitchen helper and later became a chef. Dad worked hard back in the day when the airport was flourishing preparing many meals for flights all over the world. He cooked for some famous people, Fidel Castro and Great Antonio to name a couple and met Bob Hope. We got a few famous autographs on the paper placemats from the restaurant. Dad loved to go rabbit catching and moose hunting in his younger years across Gander Lake.
Our Dad will be greatly missed by our mother Marion (Jewer) married for 67 years, his daughter Marilyn (Eric Boone) sons Ron, Derek (Wanda Hillier). He loved his granddaughters Krista (Sheldon Murphy), Ashley Boone, grandsons Nicholas and Matthew Mallows. He held a special love also for his great grandson Cadem and great granddaughter Brynn Murphy.
The family would like to thank the hospital staff on the medical floor and palliative care for their wonderful care and support.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Charles and Ada MALLOWS, his parents in law Wesley and May JEWER. Also his 9 siblings and 2 brothers-in-law and a grandson, Brandon BOONE.
A private family service will take place . Burial to take place at a later date this summer.
No flowers by request. Donations in Dad’s memory may be made to the Fraser Road United Church, Gander.
