Dean, Rose Anne
Rose Anne Dean, formerly of Guelph, passed away peacefully in her 97th year at Kelso Pines Retirement Home in Owen Sound on Sunday, October 17, 2021.
She will be missed dearly by her best friend Joan Randall of Meaford and by her niece Wendy Armstrong and Jim Watts.
Rose Anne was the beloved sister of Sister Donata ‘Flora’ of Scarborough and Catherine ‘Terry’ Terrey of Guelph and will be remembered by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents George Dean (1955) and Catherine (nee Chapman – 1994), her brothers Francis ‘Frank’ (1985) and William ‘Bill’ (2007), her sister Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Blackie (2021).
Rose Anne’s early childhood years were spent in Guelph, Ontario where she eagerly helped her parents with all of the household duties. Being one of six children there were always plenty of chores to perform around their home. When WWII erupted Rose Anne was an active volunteer with war services at the war plant in Guelph sewing garments for the soldiers. This love of God and community led to her joining the Loreto Order of Nuns at the age of 21. She then went on to Stratford Teachers College where she graduated with her teaching degree. She taught for thirty-five years and was such an accomplished educator that she was designated a principal teacher designate at the age of only 23. In her years of education she was always passionate about both her students and staff. She dedicated all of her time and energy to providing the best learning environment for success. Sister Mary Rita (her religious name) believed in both healthy minds as well as healthy bodies. She would often take her students skating where she could be seen gliding around the rink with her habit flowing behind. She also enjoyed teaching her students the game of baseball and pitching and often participated in their games at recess. Some of Rose Anne’s passions later in life were golf, Bridge and animals. At one point in her life she and her best friend of 62 years, Joan Randall, became involved in raising and racing thoroughbred horses. At the racetrack she became known as the ‘Racing Nun’ as their horses raced under the name of Jubilee Farms. Most of all it is important to remember Rose Anne for being a very principled woman who fervently dedicated her life to the service of God and humanity.
A private family celebration of Rose Anne’s life will take place at a later date and her cremated remains will be interred at Marymount Mausoleum in Guelph.
