David Morton McCaughin
March 07, 1957 – July 07, 2021

Thank you Dave for your endless love
That will help me through each day
And thank you for the memories
That will never fade away.
It is with broken hearts and great sadness, but gratitude for having him with us for 64 years. We his family announce his passing on Wednesday, July 7th, 2021.
Dave passed peacefully at the Health Science Centre surrounded by the family he loved and straight into the waiting arms of his precious son Tyler, finally reunited again after 28 yrs. What we wouldn’t have given to have seen Dave’s face in that moment when he saw Tyler again.
Dave will be fondly remembered for his generous spirit, his infectious laugh and his love of playing pranks on his family and friends. He was a hard worker who provided for his family and made sure they had everything they needed. He spent his entire career working as a bartender at the Holiday Inn and later East Side Mario’s where he was fondly known by all as Captain Dave. There he met people from all over the world and made many good friends in the bargain.
Dave loved life, he wanted everyone to be healthy and happy. He never wished ill-will on anyone. He worried for the well being of his elderly neighbour down the street Mrs. Moakler, as much as he worried about his own mom.
Dave loved to walk, he walked to and from work all his working life. He so enjoyed taking long hikes with his brother Hugh and in winter he couldn’t wait for the stadiums to open for skating. They were the first two to lace up their skates.
Dave started jogging and taught himself to run. He ran the Tely 10 for years until a back injury made it impossible to do any of these his favourite things.
Dave was just a big child at heart. He couldn’t wait for the first snowfall in winter. The bigger the snowfall the better. He would even get the snowblower to pile the snow up on our front lawn so he could begin building his snow fortress.
No ordinary Fort of course. It would involve lots of props and lighting. One year he even had a tv in there just to watch a hockey game. Then he would video tape all of this and sent it off to family and friends.
He loved having a crowd for a barbecue or a good game of poker or balderdash. He loved hosting the entire family for Christmas gift exchanges and would spend days decorating the house inside and out. Oh how he loved Christmas.
He always had a smile and a big welcome for anyone who came to our door.
Dave’s greatest joy and where he was the happiest was working in his garden. He couldn’t wait to get out there. As soon as the snow left the ground it was gardening time. He would spend endless hours planting, pruning and weeding. And then he would sit back in his chair and just enjoy the beauty of his labour.
Dave’s joyous spirit will be missed by so many. That’s how we will remember him, as someone who cherished and enjoyed life and wanted to share that enthusiasm with everyone.
Our world will never be the same.
Left behind to mourn his passing are his wife the love of his life and best friend Cathy (nee Connors)
His stepson Robbie Jordan whom he loved and raised as his own son.
His brother and best buddy Hugh McCaughin. Mt. Pearl
His sister who was so much like him, two peas in a pod; Barbara McCaughin and her wife Debbie, Dartmouth N.S.
His six sisters-in-law, who considered him the brother they never had.
Patsy Noseworthy, St. John’s
Ramona DeYoung (Timmy), Pictou, N.S
Louise Connors (Tim), Pouch Cove
Glendene Beals (Rod), North West River, Labrador
Karla Sooley (Roy), Conception Bay South
Tracy Wells (Jim), St. John’s
His much loved Aunt Anna Hulan, Ontario and long time friends Mike and Sharon Kelly, whom we spent many happy days and family vacations with over the last forty years; his 10 nieces and nephews who he thought the world of.
Dave is predeceased by his parents Hugh McCaughin and Mary(Meaney)McCaughin; his parents in-law Gus and Mary Connors and his beloved son Tyler.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the Drs. and nursing staff of the CCU at the Health Science Centre for everything they did for Dave. For your great care and compassion we his family are truly grateful.
To the hundreds of friends and strangers who said Rosary’s and offered up prayers. Who sent messages and good wishes. We all tried so hard to keep him here with us, but it was not to be. Thank you all from the bottom of our broken hearts.
Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of his life will be held at a later date, when we can all safely get together again.
If you wish to make a donation in Dave’s memory please think about making a donation to your neighborhood food bank. Dave was always concerned about the welfare of others and worried if people had enough to eat.
Along the road of suffering
You found a little lane
That took you up to heaven
And ended all your pain
You may be out of sight
We may be worlds apart
But you are always in our prayers
And forever in our hearts.
Rest peacefully Captain Dave
Until be meet again.
