Obituary of Christy Margaret MacMillan
MacMillan, Christy Margaret (89)
It is with very heavy hearts that we announced the passing of our very beloved family Matriarch, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and best friend Christy Margaret (MacLeod) MacMillan at her home in Stellarton on Saturday January 9th 2021, surrounded by loved ones in the home she maintained for over 50 years.
Born in Stirling (Big Hill), Richmond County, Cape Breton to the late Murdock Dan and Agnes MacLeod. A native Gaelic speaker, Chrissy learned English when she started school. Her Cape Breton upbringing and deep Scottish heritage would mold her into the very special and much loved woman she became. Her door was always opened for anyone, at anytime, day or night, and you would be sure you would never leave hungry. Be it her biscuits, plum pudding, fruitcake, pickled beets, chow, or homemade chicken soup. So many generations felt the love and hospitality of the woman widely known affectionately as Chrissie or “Nan”.
Christy held many jobs over the years but it was while she worked in the company store at the Stirling mine that she met the love of her life, Johnny A from East Lake Ainslie. They married in 1954 and moved to Stellarton to raise their family.
Chrissy had a wide variety of interests and was involved in her community in many different aspects. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stellarton, she helped with Explorers, taught Sunday school and primary catechism, as well as a member of the Atlantic Mission Society. Christie was also a member of the order of the Eastern Star, Harmony Chapter Number 25 and Ceilidh Chapter Number 10. As well as being made an Honorary Kinette.
Christy loved to play cards, it did not matter what it was; 45’s, Crib, Queens, 99, Scat, she would spend hours playing for fun.
Later in life she found a passion for getting back to her roots. She started taking Gaelic classes and was an active participant in Milling Frolics all over Cape Breton, sharing songs that she grew up hearing.
Chrissie was predeceased by her husband of 27 years Johnny A MacMillan, her son-in-law Angus Bruce MacDonald, sister-in-law Adele, and nephew John Murdock.
Chrissie is survived by her daughters; Agnes(Bob) MacDonald, Lorne; Jeannie MacMillan-MacDonald, Cole Harbour; Grandchildren; Rev Andrew MacDonald, Stellarton; Rob(Jes) MacDonald, Alberta; Johna (Nick) MacDonald, Cole Harbour; Crystal MacDonald, Stellarton; Lori Caughey, New Glasgow; Great Grandchildren; Celeste (Bailey), Rayne, Natalie Bell, and Bridget Elizabeth. Fur grand family; Ash, Frankie, Ferg, Finn, Blackie, Harlow, Harry, Archie, Hazel, and Dante. Brother; Duncan (Greta) MacLeod, Sydney; Jackie MacLeod, Sydney; many very special nieces, nephews, and cousins, also her very special second family, her Boston Cousins, the MacLeods and Bramantes.
Funeral will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in New Glasgow on January 27, 2021 at 2pm with the Reverend Charles E. McPherson officiating. Attendance at funeral is by invitation only. Masks and social distancing are in effect. The funeral services will be live streamed on the Angus Funeral Home facebook page. A public graveside committal service will be held in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, Alma at a later date for family and those who are not able to attend the funeral.
Memorial donations in Chrissie’s name to be given to First Presbyterian Church Stellarton or a charity of your choice.
