Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Christine (Gibson) Whelam on March 3, 2021, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. She was born in Sunderland, England on August 31, 1940, to the late Jack and Christina (Anderson) Gibson and was the loving wife to her late husband, Alan Whelam, who passed away in 2004.
After moving with her family to Canada in 1974, Tina worked at various retail establishments in multiple customer service roles. She retired at the age of 65 and never looked back. Together, she and Alan raised four children and each one felt that they were loved equally. Tina was a really lovable person and was genuinely liked by everyone. She may have been a little lady, but she certainly could stand her ground and speak her mind, when needed. Tina’s life revolved around her family. She was fiercely devoted to her family and never once put herself first. You could ask her and she’d tell you that family was all she needed. She was a wonderful sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She had a lot of hobbies over the years from pottery, ceramics, knitting, card making and enjoyed making friends at all these various places and activities. Tina was a big fan of Coronation Street and liked to show her children the places on the show that she used to frequent when she lived in England. It was very hard for her to leave her family there, but she was fortunate enough to remain close to them and still get to visit with them, either there or they would come here, many times over the years.
She is survived by her sons, Stephen (Sandra) of Saint John and Alan (Shawna) of BC; daughters, Jackie (Robert) Whelam-Phillips of Rothesay and Debbie (Joey) Keyes of Saint John; 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; several brothers and sisters who still reside in England along with many cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by 1 sister and 3 of her brothers.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, (646-2424). Due to these uncertain times and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a private family service will be held. For those who wish, donations in Tina’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by her family.
When tomorrow starts without me,
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
And took me by the hand;
The angel said my place was ready,
In Heaven far above,
And that I’d have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.
But when I walked through Heaven’s Gates,
I felt so much at home,
For God looked down, smiled at me,
And told me “Welcome Home.”
So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don’t think we’re far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I’m right there in your heart.
