Chris Sands
October 13, 1948 – February 11, 2021
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Chris Sands on February 11, 2021 at the age of 72. Chris is lovingly remembered by Janice, his wife of 47 years, his three children Rebecca (Warren), Kent (Dana), and Kevin (Catherine) and his three grandchildren that he adored Olivia, Luke, and Owen, as well as his brother Con (Geny). Chris was predeceased by his parents Allan and May Sandh and his sister Ann-Margret Persson.
Chris was born on October 13, 1948 in Borås, Sweden and had many fond memories of time spent with relatives at the family farm, Espåsen as well as at the house in Västerkärr. Chris and his family moved to Canada in 1958 and settled in the Wolseley area. He attended Gordon Bell High School, where he excelled in mathematics, participated in speed skating and became a very successful track star.
As a member of the Gordon Bell Panthers and Winnipeg Razorback Track Club in the 1960’s, he participated in provincial, national and international competitions; winning and placing in many, many races, in addition to setting records. He was fast! He specialized in the quarter mile, half-mile, mile and shot put competitions. He even set a Canadian record for running the quarter mile contest! He was a very talented, skilled runner and was described in newspaper articles as “gritty”, “the jim-dandy”, “a brilliant runner”, “the best of any era” and an “athlete’s athlete”.
His love of sports was life-long. He was a dedicated hockey fan. He loved watching the World Juniors, the Jets, and the Moose. He was also an avid, high-level curler, contributing to the success of numerous teams throughout the years. Chris worked hard at what he set his mind to accomplishing, modelling a strong work ethic. This dedication and perseverance is reflected in each of his children.
Following high school, Chris earned a Diploma in Civil Technology from Red River Community College in 1972, where he was the Student President. Shortly after graduation, he was hired by the Government of Manitoba where he worked as an Environment Officer, serving for 38 years prior to his retirement. This is where he met his wife, Janice. Together they raised their children in St. Vital, residing there for more than 40 years.
Chris enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly lake life at the family cottage in Northwestern Ontario. He liked fishing, boating, picking blueberries, and being in the fresh air, chopping or sawing wood. He also enjoyed collecting and repairing cars, a pastime he shared with his father. He had a good sense of humour and enjoyed the arts. He loved classic gangster films, westerns, and mysteries as well as the music of Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Buddy Holly.
Chris passed away in the presence of family, comforting him in his final days through conversation, music, memories, reassuring words and warm embrace. His last days were filled with love and compassion.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at Kin Place Personal Care Home, as well as the staff in the Medicine 1 Unit at the Selkirk Regional Health Complex, where he spent his final days.
An internment and funeral will take place at a later date when health advisories permit.
