We’ve lost a good man. Some of us called him Dad, to his grandkids and great grandkids, he was Dads, to his wife Florence (nee Dillon) and the remainder of his large circle of family and friends, he was Charl.
He loved to laugh at a good (or sometimes bad) joke. He loved listening to live music – Friday evenings at Kelly’s Pub with Blacky O’Leary were very special to him and Mom. In his younger years, he entertained others from the stage. House parties amongst their friends and family centred around him playing his guitar for hours in someone’s rec room – he would speak of the many nights he went home with raw fingertips from playing for so long.
He loved spending time with his family – Saturday night sleepovers with his grandson Colby were very special.
Most of all, he loved his wife Florence. They were each other’s best friend and soulmate. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 1. They were together for 62 years and lived a wonderful life. They were blessed with a 20-year retirement life together. They travelled, saw the world, and avoided our nasty Newfoundland winters by spending time with great friends at their beautiful home in Florida. A beautiful life together for which to be thankful.
Mom will miss Dad, but she will have wonderful memories and lots of support from their six kids and spouses – Donna (Chris Adey), Charlie (Paula), Fred (Shelly), Darlene (Larry Walsh), Craig (Tisha), and Michelle (Scott Chipman); eight grandkids – Chad (Tara), Shane (Amy), Dayna (Geordie), Fletcher, Dylan, Stacy, Lucas, and Colby; and five great grandkids – Nathan, Aiden, Ember, Logan, and Talyn (with another on the way).
Predeceased by his parents Fred and Ella, he will be fondly remembered by his sisters Mary (Les) and Helen (Chester) and his brothers Phil (Colleen) and Wayne (Sandra). The Dillon family, who he was very close to, will also miss the great times they shared.
Loving to entertain and share their home, Charl and Florence’s kids’ friends became their friends, and speak fondly of how welcomed they were made to feel. They too, will miss his company.
Great times were also shared through the years with Patsy and Harold Maye, and Vi and Gord Aylward – their son Gord Jr. always there to help – as well as their Three Island Pond friends, Heather Dawe, Bonnie Cook, Roy and Debbie Kendall.
The nursing staff of 7-West at St. Clare’s provided Dad with amazingly special care – Mom called them Dad’s angels.
Special thanks as well to Reverend Philip Melvin for his compassion and support.
