Carol Irene Ferro (nee Thurston), 78, of Montrose, BC passed away on June 26, 2021. Carol passed peacefully while in the care of ICU staff at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, after a lengthy battle with Multiple Myeloma Cancer.
Carol was the first-born child to George Stanley Thurston and Irene Myrtle (Galbraith) Thurston; she was born in Halifax NS while her father was serving in World War II in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Carol was born safely in a Halifax hospital the night of a treacherous snowstorm thanks to a brave taxi driver! Carol lived her early years in Halifax with her mother and her Aunt Florence; following the war her family moved to Winnipeg Manitoba, then to Windsor Ontario and eventually back to Winnipeg. Carol was a bright student and was accelerated past grade four, she attended school in the St. Vital and St. James areas of Winnipeg and graduated from St. James Collegiate. She then went on to attain her Teacher’s Certificate and started her career as a Kindergarten/Grade 1 educator in Winnipeg’s North End in September 1961.
Shortly after her college graduation Carol went on to marry her first husband and raised four children (Carla, Cayle, Christian & Cameron) whom she loved and cherished with all her heart. Carol left her teaching career to raise her children and tend the family home; her children were the center of her world, and her love, caring and pride was ever present.
Carol moved to Trail area in 1989 and began her next career with Kootenay Savings & Credit Union from where she retired in 2010.
In 2000 Carol met her beloved Gary and they were wed in June 2004 in a small, beautiful wedding ceremony held in Tadanac on the banks of the Columbia River where they celebrated with their family and close friends.
As Carol’s children pursued their own lives, she remained actively connected with them and their growing families, often travelling to spend time with them and hosting them in her home during Christmas and summer vacation season. She and Gary enjoyed travel and adventure and enjoyed fantastic adventures with friends and with Carol’s siblings and their spouses. She especially loved to enjoy the tranquility at Anglin Lake enjoying the long sunsets from the Douglas cottage dock or deck.
Carol was an active person and so was Gary, they enjoyed hiking, biking, golfing, curling, and pickleball and were avid Smoke Eater fans. Carol was an active Trail volunteer and community member; she enjoyed singing group, book club, fitness class, Friday Night dinner club and was a proud member of the Graffiti Grannies and Sisters of Colombo. She had wonderful stories to share about her friends and they were dear to her heart and a big part of her life in Trail. The family would like to thank Carol’s dear friends for their love and support.
Carol was predeceased by her husband Gary Ferro (2017) and her parents George and Irene Thurston (1982, 1990). She is survived by her children; Carla (Neil) Douglas of MB, Cayle (Jennifer) Vermeulen of SK, Christian (Jodi) Vermeulen of BC, Cameron Vermeulen of CA; grandchildren Aaron, Stephanie, Austin, Tanner, Jade, Logan, Brady, Meadow, Talia; siblings Joan (Raymond) Honig of BC, Neil (Carol) Thurston of ON, Diane (Kenneth) Skolny of AB; many adored and adoring nieces and nephews.
