Carll Barclay (Barc)’s Obituary
Carll Barclay (Barc) Holbrook of St. Catharines, Ontario peacefully passed away surrounded by family at his new home in Burlington, Ontario, the afternoon of June 5th, 2021. Barc was in his 86th year of life. His beloved wife and best friend, Kathryn, would have celebrated 66 years of marriage this coming August. Together they raised three sons, Barclay (Lilli), Ronald (Columba), and Steven (Laura) in Ottawa before making their home in St. Catharines for the past 45 years. Missing their grandfather, fondly referred to as “Bobbi”, are his five grandchildren, Lauren (Tom), Carly (Adam), Brad (Amanda), Georgia (Thomas) and Hartman, and his six great grandchildren, Vivienne, Holly, Violet, Josephine, Hazel and Maggie.
Barc was born in Montreal and moved to Ottawa as a young teen when he met Kathryn and thus began “the rest of the story”. He entered the workforce at a young age full of ambition. His entrepreneurial spirit and drive to succeed was evident to all who knew him. Barc at heart was an artist and this talent translated into designing and constructing countless custom homes, commercial buildings and hospitality establishments. To this day much of his handiwork remains dotted across North America. The number of businesses he started and operated over his lifetime is beyond imaginable and truly commendable. He never stopped creating concepts with his sharp mind. His efforts provided employment to hundreds of people over his career, and he was well respected by everyone who worked “with” him. He mentored and motivated many including his three sons who never knew there was an option other than self employment. The fruit did not fall far from the tree.
Barc had a deep love for his family, and he enjoyed nothing more than spending time with Mom and his kids at a fully seated dinner table and having a good meal. He and Kathryn welcomed family and friends to their home on Butler Crescent for over 40 years. No one ever left without smiles on their faces.
Barc was a very honest, trusting, positive, energetic man you just wanted to know and be around. He loved a good joke as much as sharing one. He never liked the word “can’t” and never backed down from challenges. No better demonstration of this was how he responded to a debilitating stroke he experienced at the young age of 69. He didn’t accept defeat and fought hard, recovering enough to continue maintaining his cherished home, drive his favourite car, and with paint brush in hand, create numerous oil paintings, all which seem more special now.
He will certainly be missed by many, but in his honour, he would want nothing less than for all those who mourn his loss, to get up, be strong, and carry on.
Barc’s family would like to express thanks for the many health care professionals who cared for him over the past few years, the Oncology Team at the St. Catharines Walker Family Cancer Center, LHIN Niagara & Burlington, and the caring Acclaim Health Nurses who aided us in assuring Barc’s peaceful passing. We also give a very special thanks to their thoughtful neighbours, especially Nancy & Ted Nunn for their constant help, as well as, Joyce & Gary Butler and Tammy & Chris Gaspich, who always kept an eye out and assisted Barc & Kathryn whenever called upon.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Friscolanti Funeral Chapel of Hamilton, Ontario. Cremation has occurred and a private Celebration of Life in Barc’s honour will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Niagara Health Foundation/Walker Family Cancer Center, St.Catharines, ON. Friends and extended relatives are welcome to leave an online message of condolence on Barc’s tribute page at www.friscolanti.com
