Obituary
On Jan 17, 2021, Carl Spreen Jr passed away peacefully in the Edson hospital at 87 years.
Carl was born in the Edson Hospital to Carl & Kathe Spreen, December 22, 1933 a whopping 13 lbs. He was 1st born followed by Ernie, Bonita, Chris, Bob and Ben.
On April 16, 1960 he married his forever love, Marjorie Ragnhild Teigen. Together they raised Lillian, Teresa, Allan and Elizabeth in the home they still reside in today on HWY 748N.
Carl went as far as completing grade 7. Even though not formally educated he was a businessman & hard worker at heart. He worked various jobs, one being with Parks Canada as well as building HWY 16. Once married he worked at Valley Dairy delivering milk door to door. Most milk was delivered to the door, however some requested to be put inside the door. When he was met with a woman in a bathtub, he then took the position of Manager the next day. He was the manager of dairy for a time, untill the company started hauling milk between Evansburg and Jasper, as there was more money to be made that way. He left the dairy when they wanted him to move to Evansburg. His home was Edson. He then purchased a truck from Charlie Sparks January 1968 and from then on was known as Carl Spreen Light Hauling. He delivered freight all through town and became very well known, well liked, and respected for his honesty and integrity. Together with Marjorie, Edson Bottle Depot was leased then purchased on September 19, 1976 until August 1996. Every Thursday was a trip to Edmonton with bottles bringing back full loads of orders for businesses in town, delivering on Fridays. To earn extra coin he often did furniture moves on Weekends. His children would take turns going on the Edmonton trips and furniture moves as Dad stopped for coffee and lunch in restaurants which, back in those days, was pretty much unheard of, not like it is today. So it was a real treat even if we had to work for it.
Dad was an avid bowler in the Thursday 9pm league, he and mom would be off. He also went to several tournaments. Trophies line up in his office of his accomplishments. Dad also loved reading Westerns, the Edmonton Journal nightly, a good old movie, cribbage, waterskiing and sledding. He taught all his children the game of crib. Much fun was had with family and friends on the sledding trips. He did not care much for music but did attend family dances at Pine Grove Hall. Visiting both sets of parents was a weekly trip. Many visits were also with the Nyssen’s. Never were kids left behind and were always included.
Later, once the kids were out on their own or late teens, they purchased a motor home taking Marjorie’s senior parents to Ontario to allow her mom to visit relatives. Many trips were to Jackpot Nevada with Gary & Tein Young, Bill & Betty Reid, Frank & Marion Stone. The second last motor home trip was in 2006 with his oldest daughter Lillian & her family. In 2008 Carl suffered a stroke which left him unable to continue driving. As a side seat driver he knew every road, location & speed limit to keep Marj on her toes. He was especially happy with his Lincoln and the smooth ride compared to other vehicles and liked to tease many on that matter. Many health related trips were taken, driven the majority of the time by his youngest, Elizabeth and on occasion her siblings. Elizabeth was a tremendous help and caregiver who spent many hours caring and being an advocate to dad as well as mom. His daughter Teresa also kept them stocked in meals to make things easier for mom. His life was full of ups and downs, defying death in accidents and in health and living life within his means. He lived his life with no regrets and was most happy in the company of his wife and children.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years Marjorie Spreen; 4 children, daughter Lillian (Dale) Nero, Teresa (Ed)Tailby, Allan (Lisa) Spreen and Elizabeth (Wade) Craig; grandchildren: Stephen, Brittney, Jessica, Samantha, Kaitlyn, Kyle, Kendall, Shannelle, Rachel, Morgan, Dawson, Jason and Danny. He also
leaves behind 11 great grandchildren, and 4 extended great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister Bonita and her family and many other family members.
He was predeceased by his parents Carl & Kathe Spreen, father and mother- in- law, Ray and Muriel Teigen, brothers Ernie, Chris, Bob, Ben Spreen and grandson Derek Tailby.
He was an awesome husband and dad to his family and will be missed deeply. We are also certain that many gals young and old will miss being called George. Should they hear it? It likely is his clone, his son, Allan.
