Matheson Bunnie “Elizabeth Ellen” (McMahon), age 84 of Miramichi, passed away on April 14, 2021 at home with her family by her side.
Born in Chatham NB, Bunnie attended White School, then high school at St. Michael’s before leaving for Grade 11 to attend Art school in Moncton. Bunnie returned to Chatham High School, St. Michael’s Academy graduating in 1954. Bunnie worked for Canada Post for 8 years. She attained her Fellowship in the Institute of Canadian Bankers in 1979 and had a long career with the Royal Bank of Canada retiring in 1996. She was Deputy Mayor of Middleton Park in CFB Trenton, Ontario. She volunteered with several local events and fundraisers including Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Bunnie was an active member in the Liberal Party of New Brunswick, and was President of Enterprise Miramichi from August 2002 to June 2006. A devout Roman Catholic, a member of the CWL, she was always active on church committees throughout her lifetime. Bunnie and Roy lived throughout Canada as Roy spent 33 years in the Military (Royal Canadian Dental Corps), and he then followed Bunnie’s career to several locations in the Maritimes as a manager for the Royal Bank before they retired back home on the Miramichi.
Bunnie is predeceased by her father Bernard McMahon who was a member of New Brunswick’s North Shore Regiment, and died overseas during World War II on July 26, 1942. Predeceased by her mother Nellie Gouchie, and step father Vernon S. Gouchie, as well as her brother’s Arthur and Frederick McMahon, and Grandson Michael Matheson. She is survived by brothers: Louis McMahon (Barbara), Vernon Gouchie (Leah); and sisters Noreen (Randy Galley) and Barbara (Willy Trevors, deceased); as well as numerous sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Bunnie is survived by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 66 years, Roy F. Matheson. She will be greatly missed by her children: Richard (Heather) of Tabusintac NB, Terry (Dawn) of Glenwood Kings Co., NB, Tony (Rosanna) of North Bay ON, Kelly (Rusty Hastings) of Oro Medonte ON, and Art (Melissa) of Miramichi, NB.
Lovingly remembered by her Grandchildren; Paige (Andrew McLean), Ryan Matheson (Leisl), Justin Churchill (Aurore), Amber Churchill, Michelle Matheson, Dave Savoy (Shelley), Carrie Keoughan (Shannon), Katina (Kevin Connolly), Tessa (Kory Clermont), Johncy Matheson (Shameia), Jordy Matheson (Caitlyn), Krista (Kevin Waldie), Corey Hastings (Amy), Rusty James Matheson, Julia Matheson and Becky Matheson (Dallas).
Her beloved Great grandchildren are Aiden, Caitlyn, Remi, Kiley, Tyler, Brianna, Bethany, Lily, Rosa, Kenna, Callie, Cecilia, Kyson, Kyler, Paityn and Presley and the newest addition Rielly who arrived on April 14, 2021.
Bunnie was a loving and caring wife and mother who always enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren sharing stories, her artistic talents and enjoyed teaching them to bake. Bunnie and Roy loved visiting family and travelled often throughout Canada, USA and Europe.
Visitation will be on Saturday April 17 at 7-9 p.m. and Sunday April 18 at 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Maher’s Funeral Home, 35 University Avenue in Chatham. A funeral service is scheduled for Monday April 19, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. St. Michaels Basilica in Chatham, NB. Father John Fraser will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial donations to St. Michael’s Basilica Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
