Bryan’s Obituary
Bryan (Brian) Ludger Akiwenzie, formerly of Neyaashiinigmiing, Ontario passed away November 17, 2021 in Sutherland Place care facility, Peace River, Alberta at age 73, after a year long battle with Cancer.
Bryan spent most of his life advocating for Indigenous Rights, right up until his last months. He moved to Saskatchewan, as a young man, attended post secondary and became one of the first Indigenous Social Workers in Canada. As Bryan discovered his culture, he started dancing and was a regular on the Pow Wow Trail. He also began to learn about the traditions and spirituality of his people and in his later years, was a Pipe Carrier and Lodge Keeper. Although born of Ojibway/Potawatami blood, Bryan’s adopted families included Mohawk, Cree and Sioux.
Bryan is survived by his wife Wendy Moore of St. Isidore (AB), brother Alex Akiwenzie (Alice) of Akwesasne (ON), sister Christalee Akiwenzie of Ottawa (ON), sister Andrea (Bill Chegahno) of Neyaashiinigmiing (ON), brother Chris Johnston (Charronne) of Duncan (BC), brother Giles “Randy” Akiwenzie (Patricia) of Timmons (ON), son Ian Akiwenzie of Toronto (ON), son Flint Tall of Porcupine South Dakota, daughter Chelsie Carrier-Akiwenzie (David) of Regina (SK) and daughter Billie-Jo Akiwenzie of Regina (SK).
Bryan is sadly missed by numerous adopted brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, and by his many grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. Bryan is predeceased by his parents Dennis and Lorene Akiwenzie, brother Peter Akiwenzie and sisters Denise (Linklater) and Lisa Akiwenzie.
Service will take place at the Chapel of Memories in Peace River, AB on Saturday, November 27, 2021 (viewing at 1:00 and service at 2:00). Bryan’s service will be Live Streamed for family members and friends who cannot attend.
