Robert “Bob” Clarke, 1949-2021
Robert “Bob” Clarke passed away peacefully on December 3, 2021, at Guelph General Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family. A man with a boisterous laugh and a gentle heart, Bob is forever held in the memories of his loving wife Sharon, with whom he shared everything for 50 years, his son Warren, and his daughter-in-law Coleen. Born in Montreal, Bob grew up in Mont-Saint-Hilaire with his parents, Walter and Adrienne, and his five siblings – Greg (Mei Mei), Leslie-Anne (Rod), Gary (Karen), and Lucie (Len) – and lived many years in Montreal before moving to the Waterloo-area with Sharon in 1977 to take a job at the University of Waterloo. Bob is also fondly remembered by his extended family by marriage, Brenda, Bruce, Kathryn (Brad) and Heather.
A devoted family man, Bob captained his closely-knit clan on many grand adventures, including driving trips through the United States and excursions to Europe and the Caribbean. He was an avid skier, gracefully “style skiing” in the Laurentians, Eastern Townships, and in the Eastern United States. Bob was a man who showed his love with actions, like standing in the cold to flood the backyard hockey rink, showing up at all his son’s sports games and practices, and always being there to offer advice, tell a story, or share a laugh. Over the years, he adored and doted on his dogs and is greatly missed by his most recent dog, Brodie.
A successful computer analyst and programmer, Bob was a deep source of knowledge on information systems and many other technologies. Having studied computer science at Loyola College, his career included positions at Honeywell, Unisys, Marconi Canada, CAST, St. Mary’s General Hospital, the University of Waterloo, and the Government of Ontario. He was a true innovator and received multiple awards for successful projects and performance throughout his career. Before embarking on his career in information systems, he held various occupations including time spent in the Canadian Grenadier Guards, work in a nickel mine in the remote North of Manitoba, and jobs in typewriter repair.
A private family celebration of life for Bob will be held at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467, on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. Those who knew Bob are invited to attend the celebration virtually at www.henrywalser.com/live-streaming.
Donations in Bob’s honour can be made to the ongoing Help Nathan Walk fundraiser www.gofundme.com/f/help-nathan-to-walk, which is raising money to help Nathan, a child with Polymicrogyria, acquire a Trexo robotic home walker. The Trexo robotic home walker provides a chance for children with disabilities who cannot walk and stand on their own to do so, and the recent fundraiser touched Bob’s heart. Donations can also be made in his honour to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
