B. Noreen Fleischauer (nee Johnston), passed away peacefully at Spruce Lodge in Stratford, ON., December 13, 2021, on her 94th birthday and surrounded by her family.
Beloved wife of Ray Victor Fleischauer (2002). She is survived by three daughters; Carolynne Hofstetter-Almas (John 2015), Anne Marie McMullen (Bob) and Marilyn Haslam (Doug). Special “mom” to John MacDonald. Cherished grandmother of Jeff, Rob, Brian, Jennifer, Julie, Michael, David, Kate, Brad and many great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Bill Johnston and Christina.
Noreen was born and raised on a farm in Howick Township. As a young child, she had a sense of adventure and there was no tree she couldn’t climb. She rode her horse, Scotty, to the country school every day. She was a Nursing graduate of Stratford General Hospital in 1948. While living in town, she met the love of her life, Ray, at a house party, celebrating his return from the Netherlands at the end of WWII. They were married in Hanover, ON. and raised a family of three girls. In the 50’s, Noreen was a stay-at-home mom and manager of the wringer washer and busy clothesline. She was the Norfolk Street “nurse”, handing out bandaids, ice packs and advice. She was a volunteer nurse at Kitchigami and Silver Lake camps and she drove seniors for groceries and appointments. At Halloween she handed out home-made fudge and taught herself to decorate cakes. The kitchen was a busy place.
Noreen was a warrior for social justice. She was a founder and volunteer for Telecare, helped sponsor refugee families and was active in Centennial United Church. Her faith was very important to her.
The family would like to thank all of the amazing PSW’s and Healthcare Aids at Spruce Lodge. A special thank you to the Parkview United Women for the many cards, visits and prayers over the years. It warmed our hearts.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at Avondale Cemetery.
