Peacefully, at Caressant Care, Woodstock , in his 97th year.
Austin was predeceased by his father, Earle, his mother, Rheta, brother, Perry and a sister, Mildred. He is survived by nieces and nephews; Bob Guthrie (the late Donna), Sharon Young (the late Dave), Mary Lynn Schira (Nick), the late Bruce Guthrie (Jane), Judi Nichol (Jim), the late Brian Sibbick (Fran), and Bryce Sibbick (Sally Martin), and their families.
Austin was raised on a farm in Blenheim Twp. He attended Etonia Public School, Princeton Continuation School, Paris High School, McMaster University, and Queen’s University, Kingston graduating in 1947 with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering.
Austin spent his entire working life with Canadian National Railways from May 1, 1947 to January 31, 1986. He worked in various capacities in Belleville, St. Thomas, London, Hornepayne, Montreal, and Toronto with his final position of Coordinator Financial Planning, Great Lakes Region, Toronto. He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. He was the sole surviving member of the Princeton Spitfires Softball Team, which won the Senior ORSA Championship in 1941. Austin loved to travel, and during his lifetime he visited all the continents, including Antarctica.
His family will miss his Toronto restaurant recommendations, conversations with him about current events, politics, science, and the Blue Jays, stories about all of the marvelous places he visited, and hot tips about the best theatre productions to see around Ontario every year. Austin was a generous supporter of many charitable organizations. Donations in his memory to a charity or to an arts organization of your choice would honour Austin’s lifelong commitment to philanthropy.
A private family service will be held with interment, Princeton Cemetery.
